2003 Gsxr1000

A 4.6 lb stock muffler?!
That's awesome, and I bought a new Gsxr1k in 2002, and I put a full Yoshimura on it, but can't remember how heavy the muffler was.
I have the stock titanium muffler off of the '18 Gsxr1k too, but it is a slip on, so the midpipe is just a flared sleeve on both ends, vs the 01/02 and 03/04 where (as you know) the factory midpipe Bolts to the muffler.
I can buy an aftermarket midpipe that will fit, but I can't be sure the muffler hanger bolt hole will line up with the passenger peg, I'de have to buy the midpipe to find out.
I can also buy a midpipe that slides on to the header, but has the 4 bolt hole flange on the muffler end, so the stock muffler and all bolt-on aftermarket mufflers for those years all fit.
Neither aftermarket midpipe have the stock style butterfly valve in them, they're just straight through.
Both are $100-$120 each shipped.
Decisions decisions...I've found that the hardest part about these kind of projects is trying to spend as little as possible, but still do it right.
And you are no help at all!
Giving me unicorns to chase!
Bah!

lmao
I’ve seen people go to the nearest exhaust shop and get a mid-pipe made but some want to charge an outrageous amount. I went the cheap route for flange on my mid pipe and bought SS plates and drilled the right size hole with a hole saw and then marked the studs and drilled those holes on my drill press, then used an eBay generic stainless pipe and cut the header end of the OEM mid-pipe and “Frankensteined” something together using my trusty harbor freight welder. Welds looked like crap but it didn’t leak at all. You don’t have to be a good welder if you have some spare cash for grinding wheels. finally, a nice coat of exhaust paint made it pretty. I don’t expect the paint to last long but the mid-pipe is hidden behind the side panel anyways so…..
Sorry to make your decision even more complicated. Lol! Wish you were closer, because I’m sure with the extra material I have laying around, we could put something together that would look nice. I’ve been wanting a pipe bender but the garage is getting full and I refuse to leave my vehicles out in the Florida sun 24/7. God willing, I’ll have a piece of land one day to build my dream shop.

Check out @HayaWakened 's picture
That's the stock midpipe with the butterfly valve in it...and it has blue'd...like it's titanium.
Assuming it is, that would mean the muffler And midpipe were ti and aluminum, and randomly matched at the factory, apparently until each aluminum and titanium muffler and midpipe ran out, and were replaced with identical looking, but much heavier stainless steel, and some aluminim.
I am also positive that my 02 Gsxr1k had a stainless steel midpipe, as it did not color or blue.

Interesting, so maybe the fancy titanium goodies were only in 2000-2001?

Not sure, but it would be 01/02 as the first model 1000, then 03/04, but from what I can tell, alot of parts are the same.
Then comes the 05/06
I know the crank timing gear, I think the starter clutch, and possibly cams are different.
Then 07/08, but it is a different engine.
I've never heard of this til you mentioned it, so maybe you could find a little more info?
I've never been a member of any gsxr forums, and can't keep up with the little that is compatible over the years.
I also searched and couldn't find any other info anywhere.
To be so light, and stock quiet, I'de love to find one at a decent price.

Just some knowledge I picked up in my Frankenstein bike days:

01 and 02 exhaust mid pipe was different, and then I think titanium headers came in 03 or 05. 01-06 exhaust are all interchangeable, that muffler I got u is off a 06 I think. Or 09. I forget.

Engine wise they made it slightly bigger every 2 years, 01 was 988cc, eventually getting to 999cc

Cams are different every 2 yrs as well but are interchangeable, 05/06 head will go on 01-04 but one motor mount won’t line up. I think 07/08 head will go on as well but my memory is kinda hazy, all my stuff is 01-06 with a few 07 parts.

01/02 u can’t flash, 03+ u can. U can run 03+ harness and speedo on 01/02 to get flash, shift light, etc but u have a 03 so that don’t matter for u.

Swingarms and front ends and wheels will swap pretty easily as well.

Right on man, thats great info.
The muffler you showed me was an 05/06
The 07/08 and the 09/14 all had factory dual mufflers.
My friends and I have had all the 1k's at some point, as much as 4 of the same year at a time, up through the 09/14
and of course only the one '18 now...but I have forgotten most of the gsxr1k info, as most of them stopped riding over a decade ago...I forget that I've forgot stuff that I forgot that I rememered...and if that makes sense...then you understand.
lmao

I’ve never owned a 1000 myself so only reason I know about the OEM titanium muffler is from discussions on the DR650 forums. When they come up for sale there they want $300 plus for the beat up exhaust (from off-roading it on a DR) and the custom mid-pipe for a DR. I do have one of those a 40F0 models sitting on my workbench waiting to be installed but previous owner punched a small hole to make it a straight through exhaust and I’ve been trying to figure out how to plug that hole to get it back to factory flow/restriction before I put it in my DR. I paid way more than I should’ve for it and had it shipped from overseas. I wish I could find some salvage yard with some stacked on a shelf full of dust so I can take them off their hands since they’d sell like hot cakes on the DR forum. Lol

since we talked about zillas this one is my friends and i just wanted to share.

Well
I told the story above of the hows and whys in my 1k project.
Since I got, I only start, or ride it once a month...until the battery recently died, lol.
But, I've just glanced at it really, as I'm not ready to start on it just yet, and am fixing everything anyway, so maybe some suprises along the way...other than the brakes are hit or miss, lmao.
I knew nothing about a run of factory titanium midpipes and mufflers, as well as headers too, until @mabupa brought it up.
I never paid much attention to this header, but it always struck me as very clean, so, I looked closer, gave it the finger pluck/tin sound test, lol, and what do you know...beater 1k has a factory titanium header!
Oh...and it has the magic number, lol...pity the midpipe and muffler are long gone...but this is a nice lightweight suprise.
I would have had to do some digging once I would have stumbled accross it on my own in the future, not expecting a titanium header at all, or knowing Suzuki did that(maybe I did and forgot, lol)
so thanks Miguel
The beater just got it first real cool points, lmao
I wonder how many bikes got the titanium header, midpipe, and muffler, and if any got mixed with the stainless steel versions?
Or if this could be a Matt Miladin edition(long painted over)?
I'll have to run the VIN# and look at the build date on it tomorrow.

I thought you were already aware the header was titanium too! LOL! There is always a handful of those dirt cheap on eBay so I’m surprised other model year owners have not tried to figure out if they would interchange. That would be a cheap easy way to lose weight. Or, maybe they’ve already discussed that on those forums and I just don’t know because I don’t read them since I don’t have a 1000.

Lol, yeah, I had no idea.
And yes, it is a forum mod, as I see 600 and 750 owners on similiar years using the 1k header and midpipe, with an aftermarket bolt on muffler.
As said, I'm not looking to spend big bucks on this thing, like $1200 for a full exhaust, which of course is a nice gain, but just knowing the header is half the weight as most other stock ones, is a nice suprise, and if I get a cf Delkevic slipon, the whole system will be under 10 lbs.

You are definitely more than halfway there considering the header the bike already has. Slap a carbon can and done.

RaceTech emailed me back and sent me a list of all the parts needed to rebuild the rear shock.
Without tax or shipping, it was under $200...and I can live with that.
So I will be ordering that when the time comes, and probably a cheap used rear shock to rebuild instead of the one in my bike, that way I can just swap them out.
