2018 copart special project

Just waiting on parts now.

I'm having a hard time sourcing the tail light cover, mine is broken. Is it something that folks generally sell as an entire assembly, or can I get just the cover? Anyone got one laying around?

Have to buy the entire assembly...there are many on ebay and amazon..

Big update!

Today the subframe came in! Here they are side by side. Notice the gigantic bend in the old one.

So I took apart the old back-end, doing my best to tape and label things so I don't forget them.

IMG_7218.jpeg

The rear brake reservoir was kind of messy, I'm sure I could have done it a better way. Eventually though, I had this:

IMG_7235.jpeg

I moved over the rear lower cowl and the ECU, etc and I thread locked the bolts the way it was before:

IMG_7308.jpeg

And I learned to use heat when removing those footrest pilion bolts (see previous stupid removal of sheered off bolts):

IMG_7302.jpeg

Got everything back together and, success it starts right up!

IMG_7320.jpeg

Put the rear break reservoir back on, and did my first one man brake bleed job. Was easy enough:

IMG_7340.jpeg

Also, I put some HIDs in because might as well:

IMG_7342.jpeg

Also installed my fender eliminator:

IMG_7344.jpeg

So now I'm waiting for the right side pilion to come in (Partzilla) and then I can mount up the exhaust. I will probs put some of the old plastics back so I can have a few indicator lights and such while I'm playing around with it. The wait for new fairings is going to be sooo hard.

I have also been working the Suzuki catalog trying to figure out which size bolts I'm missing, I think I've figured out most of everything now. There's a local specialty fasteners shop I have used for this stuff before, going to find some time this week to head down there and do a little shopping.

Looks like your having a lot of fun, awesome job getting her back on the road

Uhhhh so this bike is awesome. Holy poop it's fast. Especially down low it has so much more umph than the CBR. I get it now, this power is addictive. I like the fancy LCD screen on my CBR but...yeah I suspect I'm going to be picking the busa more days than not.

Oh, also I am SHOCKED at how quiet this thing is just sitting here idling. My CBR is a LOT louder on stock exhaust.

Realized I forgot to order the cushion to mount the exhaust, so this seems to be working for now. Zip ties + Kevlar parachute line.

Here's how it looks right now:

This look patched to y'all?

Anyone got a tire recommendation?

Yep, it's patched...you just seem to be running into more and more stuff...

Many here (including me) run Michelins..I run PR5s but to ask about a specific tire is almost as controversial as the politics thread...

I did check and they took those pipes i threw in the scrap pile at work to the scrap yard. As far as tires like be said you'll get a lot of different answers. A lot depends on what you wanna do with the bike if I could afford to replace them every 3k miles or so id run nothing but the q3+ but I'm running a roadsmart3 right now for the mileage.

Alright, got new tires on the way. Did decide to go with the Q3+ after a bunch of research.

I did go in and polish all the trim, so it doesn't look so weathered. I used a magic eraser and mother's back to black.

Did just a little bit of 2 up riding with my wife and she likes it, it's way more comfortable than the back of my CBR.

Got the back fender on, turn signals and brake lights repaired. Using the old screwed up fairings for now back there and in the front.

Still waiting for a bunch of little things, you can see the exhaust is still rigged on.

Wondering if y'all can help me with these:

1. Does anyone know the exact size of the 4 handlebar bolts? I want to get some new black fresh ones, these are discolored and I don't like it.

2. More importantly...I'm getting a...whirring? Rubbing? sound from my front tire, but I really only notice at speed. Going like 70mph cruising I'll hear it sort of a rhythmic "whom whom" I can't tell if it goes faster/slower as I speed up yet.

Just out of curiosity I put the bike on a front stand (btw pulling front fender off...not ez, I felt stupid) and spun it. You can clearly hear the brakes rubbing here, I think mostly from the right side.

I'm not sure if the brake rub is the issue, or maybe its the tires, etc. The sound I'm getting at speed sounds nothing like this light rubbing I hear when manually turning the front tire. I have those new tires going on this week so I was thinking maybe just get them on and see how it sounds after.

Thoughts?

All I could hear was the normal swooshing sound the pads make against the rotors. The whomp whomp sound while running usually means the chain has a tight spot. The new aerosol version of Back to Black works very well too, no rubbing needed, just spray it on.

The sound doesn't make me raise any eyebrows as to a major issue, sounds like typical brake drag to me.

When in doubt, give the calipers a good cleaning and lube the brake pad sliders...

And yes that sound when riding does sound like a chain issue just like @WuzzaCBXRider mentioned.

If the bike has sat for any length of time and judging at how it was maintained, the chain could be shot..all it takes is one or two seized links to cause that.

Okay so in this video I push on the chain as I rotate it.

There are a few spots that give a LOT (like around 0:49) and then some I can barely push it up (1:49).

Is this the "tight spots" that folks are referring to?

(PS For anyone searching later, gen2 handlebar bolts are M8 x 60mm)

It is and would cause that sound....chain is done.

Your chain ‘adjustment’ looks too tight to me. It does seem a tad tighter in spots but overall the adjustment is just too tight. Loosen it a tad and try again.

Might consider getting a new chain and sprockets at same time

I just inspected the sprockets fully and they seem to have the same angle on the leading and trailing edge, nice flat spots at the top of each tooth, and the same spacing between teeth. Of everything on the bike...they look pretty darn good to me.

Anyhow, new chain on! First time doing it was tricky, but figured it all out.

So far the noise is gone!

OMG on top of everything...the front axle was cross threaded. The first few threads destroyed has to retap it and put a new axle nut in.

But! got the bike back with the qs3+ on there and it is nice. Just did 100 miles in hill country to break them in.

There is noticeably less road vibration and such with the new chain and new tires.
