In a place called Medicine Hat Alberta, there is a German POW camp without any perimeter fencing with zero escapes.
As most of the able bodied men were deployed fighting the war, the POWs were able to work in the local town and surrounding countryside-they even plowed fields and harvested crops...

Crazy when you think of it...I could only imagine if they tried doing this in today's society..

That sign in your other post says a lot..."Japs keep moving-This is a white man's neighborhood" wouldn't even come close to flying today-a full blown riot would be launched.

Interesting factoid. George Takei of Star Trek fame lived in one of these camps as a child.

In 1942, the Takei family was forced to live in the converted horse stables of Santa Anita Park before being sent to the Rohwer War Relocation Center for internment in Rohwer, Arkansas.The family was later transferred to the Tule Lake War Relocation Center in California for internment.

This is our shared history and we should be embracing it, even when it doesn't always make us feel good. Good to see the National Park Service doing just that.

I did skip Mammoth, if you have the time, gotta check out Devils Postpile. Granted it's just a pile of rock, but super interesting.

The Benton Crossing Loop is one of my all-time favorite detours along the Eastern Sierra. Big 50-mile loop, end up in almost same place, zero people.

Have this all to yourself every time.

That connects to Highway 120. More frivolity. And whoops.

Mono Lake - up in those hills at 8375 ft is Bodie ghost town.

I recently finished writing an article on Bodie SHP , interesting stuff to research the history of this ghost town! No time to run up there today, but going to ride right by it.

I did want to swing by Bridgeport though. some cool buildings here & I have based tour groups here in previous years.

Maybe a mile long main street and then that's all there is for many miles.

Bridgeport is famous for very expensive gas and cows.

Where the cops sit. The highway goes from two lanes to opening up. Cops sit at either end with people pulled over. I'm using Wayz and it tells me ahead of time where all the cops are.

Figures the cops would sit there in the middle of nowhere right when the road get interesting...

I had this harebrained idea to ride up to the nearby Fire Lookout , but it's a dirt road and really rocky. Clearance on the Hayabusa is not the best. Maybe another time.

View is really something though.
