In a place called Medicine Hat Alberta, there is a German POW camp without any perimeter fencing with zero escapes.
As most of the able bodied men were deployed fighting the war, the POWs were able to work in the local town and surrounding countryside-they even plowed fields and harvested crops...

Interesting factoid. George Takei of Star Trek fame lived in one of these camps as a child.

In 1942, the Takei family was forced to live in the converted horse stables of Santa Anita Park before being sent to the Rohwer War Relocation Center for internment in Rohwer, Arkansas. The family was later transferred to the Tule Lake War Relocation Center in California for internment.

Ever in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, don't miss this place.

This is our shared history and we should be embracing it, even when it doesn't always make us feel good. Good to see the National Park Service doing just that.

The Benton Crossing Loop is one of my all-time favorite detours along the Eastern Sierra. Big 50-mile loop, end up in almost same place, zero people.

Have this all to yourself every time.

Where the cops sit. The highway goes from two lanes to opening up. Cops sit at either end with people pulled over. I'm using Wayz and it tells me ahead of time where all the cops are.

I had this harebrained idea to ride up to the nearby Fire Lookout , but it's a dirt road and really rocky. Clearance on the Hayabusa is not the best. Maybe another time.

View is really something though.
