2022 Pashnit Touring on a Hayabusa

Seals everywhere, why they chose this particular beach, nobody knows

Nearby is a tiny peninsula that juts out into the ocean called Ragged Point. The views here are amazing.

There's constant construction. Somewhere. The road keeps falling off into the ocean. CalTrans shows up to fix it. And put it back, so we can ride it again.

Some of the repairs can be huge projects. This was the slide at Rat Creek. Winter rains came in off the coast and washed away the entire hillside.

This was the Rat Creek Slide in 2021.

They fix it. Put humpty back together again, and you'd never even know the road was missing.

Some are small and easily fixed, plus you always have to be watching for rocks in the road along this stretch of highway.

Although, the craziest one in years was the Mud Creek Slide in 2017. So huge, it re-shaped the coastline. CalTrans simply plowed through it, repaved it, and in present day you could barely recognize the spot where this happened.

We also rode by Hearst Castle. You can see it from the highway atop a nearby mountain top. Ever wandering around the Big Sur Coast, it's a few miles north of Cambria and it's worth a visit. At least once, that is. It's touristy and takes half a day to visit & take the tour, but it's interesting. We've actually been there several times with groups.

Castle doesn't quite describe it. Inside is a collection of crazy eclectic stuff thrown together.

My goal for today's ride was to cross the Golden Gate Bridge at first light & enter Marin County at daybreak. Looked up the sunrise time on-line, sunrise was set for 5:50am, so up at 3:30, few minutes to load up gear, and I was on the Hayabusa at 4am and headed north towards San Francisco.

I made it through the city streets of San Francisco & across the Golden Gate Bridge at 6:00am which was perfect timing as the first dim rays of light poured over downtown San Francisco while the Hayabusa & I headed into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the best kept (not really a) secrets of the Bay Area.

This shot always reminds me of that scene in San Andreas with Dwayne Johnson and the wave that comes in and is taller than the roadway on the Golden Gate. Ya gotta watch the clip and compare it against the picture to achieve a sense of scale.

Boats headed out to sea just like in the clip

Angel Island in the distance. Angel Island used to be the Ellis Island of the West Coast. All new immigrants were taken there. The buildings are still there, but you can only reach the island by ferry.

Holy s**t...look at how steep that is...and the dozer is going up and down it!!
I think I'de pass on that job...not really into drowning at the bottom either...

Couldn't stay long, and I thought I'd be the only one up here at 6:15am, but there were other people up here too. You can walk out to the Civil War era gun emplacements, which are everywhere along this short stretch overlooking the Bay

The little island out there in San Francisco Bay is Alcatraz Prison. As in Al Capone. Been many years since I've been out there. Wife & I toured it when we were dating 20+ years ago.

See that jetty down there. Figured I'm gonna head down there & check that out.

This bike has been sold.

While I was sitting here, the message came in from the buyer, sold. This bike is headed to Texas.

It's time to move on. A Gen-III Busa is next. Now I just have to find one.

In Fort Baker, a re-purposed Civil War era military base, the original buildings are all still there, but this one was a hotel. Pulled it up on-line, $800 per night for a room.

See that zig-zag line?

That's actually an old railroad bed built in the 1890s.

In August 1896 a 7-mile railway was completed from Mill Valley after six months of work to reach the summit of Mt Tamalpais. Locals in 1896 took a steam train to the summit and then boarded a passenger car much like the replica you see today. The Scenic Railway was called the “The Crookedest Railway in the World”, twisting down 281 turns (in 7 miles) through numerous switchbacks and paralleling itself five times. The tracks had an average 5% downgrade and the gravity cars held 30 people. A ‘Gravity Man’ operated a set of strong double brakes to maintain a steady 10-15 mph speed downhill. Steam powered trains then pushed several cars back up to the summit.

The tracks have long since been pulled up, and now it's a hiking & mountain biking trail.
