Learned this one when I was 16! I've had to school numerous people on this one, however.

(Charlesbusa @ Jul. 31 2007,01:40) OK, people don't know this?? This is driving 101...

the car to the right has the right of way.

A better question would be what if all 4 cars at a 4-way stop stop at the same time rock.gif Which one is the car on the right....

My grandfather taught me a trick. If it looks like you'll stop at the same time. Stop early, before the white line. The car that stops first, goes first wink.gif
I'm with him- I thought EVERYONE had to know this... rock.gif

Four way stops are like a MENSA test sometimes. The vehicle on the right always has the right of way when 2 cars arrive per the drawing above. The problem here in the south is everybody wants to be friendly and let the other person go first, regardless of who has the right-of-way. It drives me crazy. Now then, how about those left laners on 4 lane highways??

Wiki got the answers

In the United States and Canada, there are many 4-way intersections with a stop sign at every entrance. In this case, the default rule is:

1. Whichever vehicle stops first has priority.
2. If two vehicles stop at the same time, priority is given to the vehicle on the right.
3. If three vehicles stop at the same time, priority is given to the two vehicles going in opposite directions.
4. If four vehicles stop, drivers usually use gestures and other communication to establish right-of-way. In some areas, the custom is for the north-south or the more-trafficked road to have priority, although this is rare.

Just like when boating on the lake. Powered boats have a red light on the left front of the boat to tell a boat approaching from the left to give the "right" of way to the boat on the right. (just a little trivia)

In Saint Louis, it is whoever guns it the fastest and no one stops at stop signs, so who knows who got there first. Four ways are scary around here. Everyone goes at once.

What they should do occassionally, is pop this question at a road block to every single driver and if you get it wrong, you lose your license immediately, because that means you didn't pay attention in drivers ed and more than likely...are dumb as a bag of hammers.

Those who don't know this, need to take driver's ed, for once, or AGAIN! umnik.gif

A lot of people DO know it, they just don't APPLY it. winkold.gif
