Ford EcoBoost Engines...Thoughts?

Okay, I'm a Ford guy. Through and through, and I like the fact of the twin turbo V-6, but don't believe any of this torture test, and teardown crap and all the videos you see of it on youtube with the dude from Dirty Jobs. That motor that they are using and tearing down was built by hand, in a laboratory, not a factory by Union workers. That motor was built to VERY demanding specs and most likely put together by engineers not normal workers. Now I don't know this for a fact, but its just like the race motors that are built, and blueprinted, etc. They can get WAY more HP out of them, and also more longevity. I just think that the Ford guys think nobody will think of this when they throw this down our throats... Also, whats gonna happen to these motors when Edge Performance and Bully Dog get ahold of them. I've owned a Subaru WRX, and my best friend owns a built STI, and let me tell you, the reliability of a turbo motor goes WAY down after you start "over" boosting them... I'm just worried that people are gonna see this motor like the diesels and start adding "hop-ups" to them, and boom, no more Turbo V-6's in pickup trucks... It has such potential, and I really hope it pans out.
I'd LOVE to see that kind of mpg in a full size truck, but I also only got like 22 mpg in my WRX since at freeway speeds as soon as you breathe on the gas pedal you are right in the turbo's sweet spot. You mentioned that it made that power at 1500 rpm. That truck would have to be geared way high to make it under 1500 rpm at freeway speeds.. I'd like to see/hear some REAL WORLD mileage reports. Including pulling a 10,000 lb trailer. I got 22 mpg in my '04 F150 with the 5.4L but I had 3.73 gears in it.. My buddy with 4.11's got like 17mpg freeway. If the overgear the truck to get outlandish mpg readings then the towing mpg goes to crap... He would consistently get better gas mileage towing then I would.
UncleSteve, can you give us some REAL numbers?

Bots it said right in article the engine was taken right off the assembly line.

I quote:
A production EcoBoost V-6 engine, serial number 448AA, was randomly selected off the assembly line at Ford’s Cleveland engine plant.

So your theory is kaput....

Not my whole theory. Still like to know how the turbos would hold up at that supposed high mileage. I'm telling you right now, I'm a Ford fan. I drive a Ford truck now, and have had 6 out of my last 7 vehicles be Fords.. I'm just not buying in to all the hype. My boss has one on order, and I guess I'll wait to see the real world tests. I also read in the fine print that the one truck that gets the 22 mpg can only tow 8600 lbs. Is this correct? A Toyota Tacoma can tow more than that, and get better mpgs than that is all I'm saying. I'm not Jealous or anything like that since I'm a Superduty guy myself, and don't care for the new style of F150 in general. I love that motor in the SHO, just don't think its Ford Truck worthy. If this was such a good idea, why not twin turbo or single supercharge the 5.0 liter motor and factory warranty it. Also, if they are so sure this motor is proven, how about backing it up with a 100K warranty instead of 3/36? Do we have to wait for Hyundai to make a truck to take notice of this? We all know Dodge did the lifetime warranty, why not offer this if they are so sure about it? Just wondering.. Not trying to flame here, I really want to have answers to this. I'll hook my V10 Triton with 60K up to this F150 if they want to compare torque. Based on their ratings they "should" be pretty close to the same numbers. After driving a twin turbo 6.4L diesel, if the twin turbo setup is the same (one for low rpm boost, one for high rpm boost) I won't be impressed at all. If Ford wants to impress me, stick a diesel in an F150. Be the first to do that, I'll be shocked. Turbo motors require maintenance that the average truck owner won't give them. Let's see some real world farmers, haulers, TRUCKERS, putting 150K on these and then tear them apart. I understand they ran it in a baja truck, and I know the amount of abuse that will give this motor, but they NEVER talk about the turbos. Did they last that long as well? How well did a turbo do in the desert. Awfully dusty for a twin turbo setup.

I am impressed in this motor, and SUPER excited for the way things could be going, but they need to remember truck owners don't mess around. Once bitten twice shy. They have the potential to lose quite a bit of customers if this doesn't pan out. You always hear those old guys sitting around "I had a Dodge/GMC/CHEVY/Ford, once..."

turbo timers can be over rated, only use is for when u really run the vehicle hard, to give turbo time to cool, normal driving, just let car run for about 15 sec or so before you turn it off, they are nice though.

Why would I sit in my car/truck with the engine idling, when I can just get out, walk away, and let the turbo-timer take care of it? :moon:

You don't need turbo timers at all. These are all liquid cooled turbos nowadays, not the ones of yesteryear. Unless your turbo is red hot, which if it is, you've got another set of issues, you can shut that sucker off nowadays without any issues at all. No need for a turbo timer..

I'm not talking about that, man. I'm responding to the guy who thinks it's better to just wait in your car/truck with the engine running.

Toyota Hilux (Tacoma) Diesel Option available in U.S. 2010 by pstory23
Oct 01, 2008 (2:07 pm)
Toyota already makes a diesel version of the Tacoma (known as the Hilux). The Hilux offers two turbocharged diesel engine options. These vehicles get 30-35 mpg, can tow 5,000lbs., and will last 300,000+ miles. If you want it in the U.S., then go to the Toyota website and contact them, via email, and request it. Let them know you want the Hilux (with the diesel option) available in the U.S. as soon as possible. I contacted Toyota and they said they are considering bringing the Hilux to the U.S., but were gauging customer demand. Each customer's request is given a file number and is cataloged. When enough people demand the Hilux in the U.S., they will make it available. So now is the time to let them know what you think!

P.S. Just google "2009 Toyota Hilux Euro Spec" if you want to see the Hilux already available in Europe. The Hilux is a far superior vehicle than the Tacoma we are stuck with in the U.S.

Why is something like this NOT available in the US? I Would buy a truck like that tomorrow.

If that truck came to America, it would be right around the $45K price-range. That much money for a truck that can only tow 5,000 lbs?
No thanks. I'd buy a used 3/4 ton diesel Ford/Dodge for half that price before I bought that and be able to pull down a house with it..

That exact truck is sold for 10000 to 19000 pounds in Britain (per article). I'm pretty sure if people living in the Dutch west indies can afford 'em, we Amurricans can afford 'em.

Okay, so just straight conversion that is about $31K US dollars. Now add on all the government crap that the US will have to have on that truck, and I bet you are close to $35K US before we see it. For a truck that can only tow 5,000 lbs. Still not interested. I like Toyotas, and I almost bought a Tacoma. Bulletproof trucks, just can't see spending that much money for a small truck with pathetic payload is all. The gas Tacoma can tow over twice that now..:banghead:

THe thing is, Ford has put out word that they will not honor the warranty on these Eco Boost engines if they have ANY modifications. Even an air filter or muffler.

You can thank the tuners that did not understand the DFI on the SHO's and blew them up, then turned it into warranty......

Look around on the boards and you will find this is true. Much to the dismay of my friend who bought one and was looking at "turning one up"

Either way I think the technology is going in the right direction now in regards to power vs economy. I for one do not want to ride around in a little hybrid car and would much rather prefer a truck that has good MPG and the ability to tow a pallet of stone when I need.

Keep it going in this direction and there will be a lot of nice vehicles to choose from soon enough.

I just hope it doesn't get a bad rep by people adding tuners to them and blowing them up then... Look at what that did to the reputation of the 6.0 Powerstroke. If you leave that motor stock, it will last forever, but people just couldn't leave them stock. Boom..

Came into work this morning, and my boss is driving his new truck. Black 2011 F150. 4 door, long bed, Lariat. $47,000 and its a 5.0 liter. Not the EcoBoost.. He couldn't wait any longer, so he SETTLED. I don't know what kind of idiot SETTLES on a $47,000 truck... Dufus. Its even the color he didn't want, and it has the chrome package which he told me a month ago he hated.. Grrr.... :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I'm still on the fence about this whole engine.. I hope it works out for them as it would be a game changer for the rest of the industry. On the other hand like many others I would just be happy with say a 4.0L turbo diesel under the hood of a 1/2 ton truck or full size SUV.

I love my 6.0, and yes they have a very bad reputation. Ford solved all of the early problems they had with this engine, and even though I have clean oasis report, I can not get anywhere near book on it because dealers are afraid of the engine in my truck. I was trying to trade it last month, and never could get over 19k for a 28k truck. Oh well, until diesel comes down, I wont be buying another one. This eco boost engine fits the bill nicely for what I want in a truck.

With tuners, and Ford already saying they won't warranty tuning this will happen to the EcoBoost as well.. Ford didn't kill the 6.0L powerstroke, the aftermarket community did. :banghead:

I posted this in another thread, but why can't Ford/Dodge/GM actually make diesel motors with more HP/Torque and not rely on aftermarket companies to give them better power/towing/fuel economy? And warranty them as well.. Everyone would be happy, and we'd all be driving around HUGE hp diesels with factory warranty. Pipe dream I guess..
For now, I'll stick with my gas guzzling V10..

I was a GM guy for over 30 years, but I have been driving Ford trucks since 2004. I'm in my 3rd F150 now and I have not had one single problem with any of them. They are by far the best handling truck I have ever driven. I'm getting ready to buy one of the new eco boost trucks as soon as my dealer gets one in the fastest color, red.:thumbsup:

My last 3 Fords were Red. I bought a black F250 this time. Sure looks good when its clean.. Key word being when.. :banghead:
I miss my red. All trucks look good in red. Congrats from converting from the dark side! :beerchug:

I like my Tundra. SUPER comfortable, even for the long hauls like you wouldn't believe. Enough power to pull my trailer when I want to. Its the V6 but thats all I needed. 18 city/21-23 highway
