Gen 2 Trunk Mod

You guys using anything to seal the corners from dust and such getting in there. I am thinnking of trying some foam that I can cut in a wedge shape and a small screwdriver to keep dirt out of there.

Any other better suggestions?

Black silicone, or better yet, just replace it with the trashcan bottom(all 4 sides). I did and it's much better. The undertail is the same too. Just cut a trashcan down and put it in.

Thanks, Ive done the mod. Lovin it!

I just need to keep the dirt from circulating up and into the storage area there now.

Its an OCD detail i must take care of or I might lose sleep, Lol...

Oh, gotcha. Same problem with stock trunk. I've thought about some closed cell foam to put around it. If you get caught in the rain water will blow in between the passenger seat or seat cowl too. I've been thinking about glueing a piece of closed cell foam with some silicone(peels off without removing paint) around the top of the undertail to prevent that too.

I finally found the trashcan that works at a Home Depot. Not quite 9" wide but it works very well. No little tabs on the inner corners to deal with. I almost ended up with a blue one as that was all that was left on the shelf but after inquiring they were able to find black ones on an end cap.

I struck out at Walmart, Target, Staples, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowes, and the first Home Depot. Most places they are more expensive due to having lids and none were the right size.

Home Depot sku 640-484 28qt Office Waste Basket.

I used plastic interior clips along with a few interior screws from Mitsubishi cars I've had over the years.

As for keeping stuff dry in the trunk I just plan on using gallon sized ziplock bags.

I did it finally. It wasn't so bad it was way easier than I thought it would be and I took the hole tail off. Its much easier to cut once the under tail is off. I used a rubber made trash can that had a bottom that measured out to 8" x 12" at the very bottom. It feels strong. I made it 6" deep and have been riding over every bump to test for rubs. So far no rubs. I cut the trunk out with a box knife. and the trash can with kitchen sensors. Its held in place with snap rivets. Its going to be fun to see other riders expressions when I pull a change of closes of a big soda out of the back. I can even go to the range with out a back pack. I'm loven this.

I'm sick of chickening out on this mod! I'm gonna do it this winter.. Anyone have a spare tail they want to donate? I need a chicken smilie...:banghead:

Me too. This is like 100 perfect mods in this thread and I'm still chicken :(

Why don't you ride up here, and we'll do yours first (you know, just to work the bugs out) then we'll do mine. I'll buy the parts, fair enough?

Bots I think if I mail you mine and you mail me yours, then we mod them and send em back they'd come out better :)

I've got better luck on others folks stuff.

You guys realize that you can cut the trash can straight across at 4.5" to 6" tall, then trim 2 slots/grooves for the seat/hump to fit in the front.
Then cut the rectangle out of the undertail...along all 4 sides that are already there.
Then rivet or bolt each side in.
It's that simple now.:poke:

If either of you screw it up I'll buy you this one.
Fair enough?

I screwed it up... You need my address?? :dunno:

PM it to me...really.
Then you can send your good one to Saiid once you see how easy it is.

I haven't left the computer yet, how could I possibly screw it up yet?
I'm definitely trying this within the next month or two. If I can get up the nerve to do it... :banghead:

My offer will stand...
Until I start selling pre cut trashcans:laugh:

This past weekend I swapped my version 1 to a version 2 within about 30 minutes. The file box was working, but I liked the cleaner look of the trash can bottom. I ended up going with a 7.5 gallon can from Home Depot. It fit great and I now have a completely sealed trunk.
