Gen 2 Trunk Mod

Successfully completed mine on 2nd gen Busa. Simply used office sized staples and cloth tape to fix it on and then a welcome mat used as a rubber pad and it looks great!

I'm impressed that yours only took you "an hour or so" to do, coz mine took basically a whole day (including finding a suitable box)

great idea tho mate!

Works a treat with my hand made luggage racks. (probably would not have gotten around to making them if i'd had this extra space, so im glad i only found this now)

Thanks, stick around and you'll find all kinds of great mods for the Busa.
Leave now if you don't want to spend money on all the aftermarket stuff you can get here too!
:welcome:

Glad you guys are finding great mods, post up pics when you get a chance.

Rubbermaid trash can at Home Depot for $5.99, 28quart. Drew a line around the bottom of the can with a black sharpie and a machinist's square set at 4.5". The black sharpie shows up okay, but you have to hold it in the right light. Figured that way it wouldn't show up after the install. Cut the can with a razor knife. Set it in the cut out and marked the location of the seat/hump hooks. Back out to cut the notches, then right back in to set the correct height and trace the back edges. Back out for final trimming of the back. Then in the final time to drill, pop rivet and bolt up. Total time about 2 hours and 40 minutes. 40 minutes to remove the rear, cut the inner fender, install the butt can and button her back up. 2 hours of reading and re-reading this awesome thread all week, well something like that.

Was this an adaptation from a previous project on a car or motorcycle or complete original idea? Not sure I would have gotten up the nerve to start cutting the inner fender without seeing the results in this thread. Been said before, but thanks a ton for all the sharing of great ideas.

Thank you sir, and yes, this was a completely original idea of mine. I wanted more space, the Busa looked like it had plenty of room, so I tried the filebox and later went to the trashcan.
As you can see it's a very simple thing to do, and I'm happy it's worked so well for myself and others.
I should've patented it and sold $7 trashcans for $50:laugh:

Great idea. I'll probably do this over the winter when it's not a 100 plus degrees in the garage. It will be easy enough to replace once the mod is complete, but I wonder if the trash can will ever deteriorate

Doubt it, the plastic seems to be about the same as what's used to make the factory undertail. It's very strong for all it is, I think it'll last as long as the rest of the bike.
Has your kitchen's trashcan crumbled and worn away:poke::laugh:

I only use the highest quality $7 Hefty trashcans:laugh:

Me too. I used a heavy duty 13.5gal kitchen trash can. Its pretty thick so I done see any issues.

You could certainly sell precut cans for $50.

did mine this weekend and it turned out perfectly, was very easy and straight forward. Only issue i have, didn't think about the pyramid rear tire hugger i have that adds about an 1" above the rear tire. Went with the 4.5" depth, didn't want to go too deep bc of rubbing. With the hugger though, i'm concerned it will rub with the wife on the back. Any of u guys runnin huggers, and what depth did u go with? Guess i will just have to try it out and see what happens. Just don't want it rubbin my hugger too hard and damaging/breaking it

I've seen the gen2 Busa tire hugger, and if I had to bet I'de say that it will hit with a passenger. Riding without a passenger shouldn't be an issue, but that also depends how stiff your rear suspension is.
The trashcan plastic is soft so I wouldn't be concerned about breaking the hugger, but it may rub some paint off the tip of it.

i'll keep a close eye on it and just take a few short trips with the wife and then decide i guess. She rarely rides with me anyway, but i don't want to be out on a long trip and have it smackin the hugger constantly. Got a rough measurement and i have about 3" clearance btwn the hugger and can, maybe just a smidge less. Suspension all stock
