Gen 2 Trunk Mod

Re: Gen II Trunk Mod

damn! not liking the water problem! not one bit!

The problem he is referring to is the same problem you would have with the stock cargo area. It is just that there is more space for water to get into when it does

You could drill 2 small holes in the back corners if you are that concerned about it, although it has not been a problem for me.

Re: Gen II Trunk Mod

I have not had a problem either. I have to remove my tail this weekend to install a back off stobe and I am going to seal up the back end with something.

Like Sous said TwoTone, it's not water from underneath. It's the water that runs or blows in between the rear seat/hump and the fairing, just as the stock trunk does. Very small drain hole(s) may not be a bad idea, assuming they are small enough to keep roost off the tire from getting in.
I'm still looking at different weatherstripping trying to devise a SIMPLE way to waterproof the trunk.
Between the lot of us, we will perfect this thing. Everyone else, be patient with us, we're workin on it:laugh:
Then I can patent and sell it...you'll never be able to buy a trashcan at Wal-Mart:rofl:

Re: Gen II Trunk Mod

So I do have one question though. Did you have to cut out the OEM trunk space or is it somcething that bolts in and out?

Yes, it gets cut out, look at the the picture in the 1st post of this thread. The new trunk pop rivets or bolts into place, that's up to you.

Re: Gen II Trunk Mod

Did you reinstall the rear fender? Looks like with the five inch tub, it would go right back on.

Re: Gen II Trunk Mod

TwoTone, can you combine this thread with the original trunk mod thread please?

So last question.. My bike is lowered approx 1.5" I weigh 220lbs and am usually a single rider.. can I still cut it across at 4.5" tall or should I go with say 3"?

I did 4.5 in but other guys went more. My bike is stock, I would think as long as you do not go past the bodywork you should be ok. If you get some tire rub the garbage can is heavy plastic/rubber it should be ok. we dont really hit to many bumps. if you ride two up then you might have clearance issues. Just my .02

4.5" is good for stock height. You may or may not have rubbing over hard bumps lowered 1.5".
If you should it's really no big deal. Just take the trunk out and cut 1" to 1.5" evenly off the top of the box all the way around, redrill your holes and put it back in.
I think you may only have rubbing over potholes or hard bumps, only resulting in a small scuff to the box bottom.
4.5" is even across the bottom, I'de try that 1st, if it doesn't work for you, just trim it. I had mine at 6" or 6.5" originally, but with my wife on the back hitting a pothole it would scuff, so I made a smaller one, the 4.5".

Thanks for the input.. I'll start at 4.5" and go from there. I was hoping to get it as deep as possible as I hate to wear backpacks when I ride and such.

Well I completed my trunk mod tonight.. I bought both the trashcan and the file folder deal (figured I could use either one for something else if I didn't need it).. anywho.. I jacked up my garbage can  so i used the lessons learned and applied it to the file folder box and WHAM-O instant trunk space  ... It's a little close to the rear wheel when I sit on her but we'll see what happens if anything it will give me the opportunity to to try the can again... The gatorade bottle was all that i had handy for the pic's... this place is full of great info!

Thanks for all of the comments. I hope it doesn't rub.. I only went 3.5 inches with it knowing that the lowering kit would be a little close. I sealed up the rear of it with some black silicone I had laying around so I don't have to worry about losing anything small out the back of it.
