For my 3500th post I thought I would go on a rant. So here goes.
I have been in my current profession for 20+ years and my current employer for the bulk of that time. Things are tough all over and in the last year or so my department has lost over 30 people who left for greener pastures most of whom were friends. Recently I have had very little enthusiasm for the job and the rapidly dwindling herd and all time low morale have made me start looking around to see what else is out there. Well my wife sends me emails daily with job openings and the other day she sent me one titled "the perfect job for you"! And in fact It was right up my alley so I polished up the old resume' and applied for it. They responded immediately and I made arrangements for an interview. Well they offered me the job on the spot and they agreed to pay me a good deal more than I currently make! I was so amped I couldn't believe it. But then the reality of it all came crashing down. The Health insurance benefits are a far cry from my current package and the monthly cost of Health insurance would have gone up approximately 3 fold! The cost of the insurance would almost eat up almost all of the wage increase I was so excited about only moments earlier. So my wife then started looking into private insurance for her and my kids and it was almost the same price but actually better coverage. So I am now faced with one tough decision. Take this job and make more money only to fork it back out to cover the health insurance or stay the course with my current job and hope things improve. The state of health care in this country is epidemic and I can only imagine it will get worse before it gets any better. I am just sick to my stomach thinking about it right now. We recently watched the movie Sicko by Michael Moore. Now don't get me wrong I cant stand the dude but the movie really hit home. It looked in detail at health care in this country and socialized medicine in several other countries. It is a real eye opener and I would encourage anyone reading this to watch it. I know it is a one sided view of the situation but it is compelling to say the least. All the sabre rattling by the presidential candidates lately hopefully will result in positive change though I don't at the moment see how.Perhaps some of the members of this board outside the USA that do have socialized medicine can comment on the pro's and cons of the systems in their countries. I would be really interested to hear the down side to it?
Stay healthy out there!
