I studied history simply because it interested me. Never thought about how much I could or would make if i pursued a career as a teacher or similar. Nowadays kids first of all don’t seem to have much interest in anything nor can they pay attn longer than a tik tok lasts. And second if they do go to higher education thats top of their list ‘how much am I gonna make?’. They pick their field of study based on potential future income and not the basic interest in that particular study. I know kids with degrees who struggle to survive and find work. And I know kids who went to technical schools to be electricians or plumbers and are raking it in.
Having said that there are some professors in some schools making seriously good money. More than you think.
And I'll share another truth. It's not about WHAT the degree is in, so much as the stat that can be published about number of employees with higher education. Doesn't mean they are productive in the workplace.
I got transferred to the Shuttle Program in 87. After they had turned over operational sustainability to the manufacturer. Which was us.
I transferred in already in management. My specialty was breaking up logjams.
One of them was a certain gender and certain ethnicity that ran the consumables.
I needed nitrogen to cool our Tacan testbed. I had projected that need 3 days before.
Now we were out and I'm getting 911 calls about it.
For the 3rd time I ask her why I don't have nitrogen. Nothing but b/s answers.
I can see the effin tanks of nitrogen less than a mile away that we got our supply from.
So I called the tank farm.
You have Nitrogen? Yes. Like tons of it.
Fine I'm going to be bringing a truck over in a bit.
Went to transport supervisor. Frank can you get me that truck filled with Nitrogen?
Sure. Who's asking? Me!
Ummm Tom ummm you can't do that.
Frank do you want to get me Nitrogen or not? *I gave him the grin he knows*.
Ummm....grinning back......let me get the keys.
We transferred a truckload.
Problem solved.
She freakin popped a gasket!
Next up my ass is in trouble. Meeting called.
You can't do this Tom.
I just did.
You circumvented. Yep I did!
She should have done that.
Tom she has her job to do.
Well so do I. It's why you transferred me here.
Then she pipes up. You can't disrespect me. I didn't get my masters degree for this nonsense.
I'd like to know what you degree you hold. I said I have a master's degree.
I asked again. In what.
Forestry.
Did you say Forestry?
Yes.
Im now going to be a jerk. I asked everyone. Can someone tell me where the closest tree is because last I checked nothing on the Shuttle burned wood.
This was unfortunately commonplace B/S.
None of which I miss.
