Running from the man...It can get you killed

I re-read the quoted MSNBC story. It reads like a tabloid. Accusing officers of thinking that there is a dead body in every trunk. Making adrenaline and excitement sound bad. Some guy that I never heard of spent "20 years" studying police chases. So what. I spent 20 years studying women, and that doesn't make me an expert.

RAW- I don't drink, but who is selling all of those two-packs, and why does it cause a 195lb male to blow a .25 before falling out of the chair and then barfing on the floor before passing out?

All these people talk crap from the safety of their white picket fence community yet theyre the first ones screaming for more police protection when their house gets burglarized or their bike gets stolen.

About seven years ago, a female police officer in the City of North Miami was killed when she lost control of her car while running lights and siren to a call involving a man who was being beaten in a local parking lot.
This was a person that died in a car crash trying to get to the aid of a man she never met.
Every single day Police die and put their lives in jeapordy trying to help people that they don't even know.
Every day Cops go into crack infested neighborhoods making arrest on dealers that sell poison on the streets, possibly to your kids and what do they get in return. They get a$$holes screaming profanity at them..."Get the f*ck outa my hood!" This while trying to make their nieghborhood safer.

Bottom line is this, our laws, including traffic laws, were put into place through legislation and in a general hope that these laws will keep the public safe, sometimes if even from themselves. Police are there to enforce those laws, you got a few choices the way I see it.......

1) Obey the law.

2) Break the law and possibly suffer the consequences; i.e. Jail time, fines........

3) Get invloved and change the law.

Oh..and ZXALAN....dont be a hypocrite, dont call the cops if your house gets broken into or your wife or daughter gets raped....remember "FUKK THE POLICE!"

This post gets more interesting, the more I check it. To the officers on the board... please there is no disrespect to you at all...

This has turned into a game where (some) members choose to play with you. We all have different opinions on the subject, but getting nasty over it, is just as nuts as speeding and chasing.

I for one, do not believe in chasing down speeders..... I think there are better ways to stop them....

I have never asked an officer if I can ride along for the day and I am sure that if I did ask, the answer would be no.

I would not want your jobs in a million years, too much harassment, danger and bullshit.

Have you ever wondered why the police look so bad in many eyes????

I have been stopped at least once a year for speeding, (maybe 15k over speed limit) for the past 23 years. I have treated with respect by one officer, a local guy.

So, we have 22 out of 23 officers who were complete sugarbritches... Perhaps we all have to change our attitudes a little.

I have stopped about 20 people in the past month for various traffic violations....of those I can think of two that were polite to me. Most were complete a$$holes. As if it's my fault they blew the red light or were flying through the school zone.
So because 90% of the people I stopped were frickin jerks, should I let that effect my attitude towards everyone?

Believe it or not, I always start off on the polite foot when stopping someone.
First of all, you never know who your stopping and second, it's always easier starting off nice, you can always move up to being a prick if someone starts with you, it's very hard to go the other way.

Don't judge what we do till you've been there and you know how hard it is.

Oh, and adowell, most departments have a policy on civilian ride alongs. I would call your local agency and ask them when their shifts start, show up at the station and speak to the shift supervisor. They will always let you ride. It might give you a different angle on this, plus it should be a lot of fun. Suggestion, ride on the afternoon shift, usually from around 3:00pm to 11:00pm, you'll see the most action.

Todd, Guess what happened on my tour at work tonight. Well one of my coworkers was passed by a speeder in a Red Mustang Gt doing 120 mph in a 55 mph zone. As we manuevered in position to make the traffic stop the suspect refused to pull over, even turned off his lights. To make a long story short, we chased the suspect for 12 minutes and I performed a pit manuever and ended the chase. Low and behold the vehicle was stolen in a car-jacking in N.C. where the owner had been shot. The suspect also had 3 outstanding warrants for Armed Robbery and assault on a police officer. But your probally right I should have just let him go with a wave goodbye. Maybe one day you will wake up and realize that we live in a violent world , God forbid you have to find out the hard way, imagine if it was your family in the car and he carjacked you. I am not out to collect any money for my police dept and we dont have stats so please find another excuse. Im sure Kurt and I have heard them all. By the way why not take a ride along with your local police dept sometime and look at some of the things we have to see daily, including the victims of crimes. If anyone is near Atlanta I would be glad to show them first hand.

"I just stopped to ask for directions. That dude must have thrown those drugs in my car when I wasn't looking."

"You're just hassling me because I'm (fill in the blank).". Note: Subject has usually been (fill in the blank) all his life, and has never been of interest until about five minutes ago.

"It's my friend's car". Followed by lots of dead air when asked what friend's name is. I always wondered if it was also friend's screwdriver.

"Rodney King!!" usually accompanied by falling on the ground and covering their head with both arms, in response to me scratching my nose.

Wake up Kirk, you all are being held accoutable for exactly that, in several cases around the country, including two here in CT...don't worry about me, when one of you kill me for nuthen, I will more than likely be on a bike, so it will be my fault, yer duty done...You will probably be out riding at extra leagal speed someplace and unenvolve, of course, but you are gonna hafta stop crashing into pedestrians and carloads of people while chasing some one who will be out on the street again in hrs or days, more than likely, and you damn well know it....
