Russia and Ukraine

I think the Ukrainians are placing a lot weight on the F-16s making a difference......they have already been advised to not operate them within the front lines-so in other words, "you can have them just don't get them shot down"

So what's the point if they aren't allowed to do what these things were made for?

They aren't air superiority aircraft so they will never be safe to operate in a non-controlled airspace.
I take that statement to mean not to use as a CAS role, but rather engage the Russian aircraft to try and get the airspace under control.

And/Or bomb the crap out of behind the lines Russian cities.

From what I've read, the Ukrainians aren't to venture into Russian airspace....

The west really doesn't want F16s to be shot out of the skies I guess...

I can see this war escalating at some point.....Russia will only take western intervention for so long......I think Russia is awaiting the outcome of the next US election to decide what their next course of action will be.

Putin has been rattling the nuke saber lately....it goes to show how desperate he is starting to get......if he were to nuke Ukraine, a lot of the fallout would go into Russia from the prevailing winds.....and he knows this.

As much as I admire the tenacity of the Ukrainian pilots, they are not going to transition into the F-16 effectively just by kicking the tires and lighting the fires. It takes months to transition into a new platform. Even the stripped down F-16s take time to master.

I don't believe for one second they aren't going to try to bring the war to Russia in the 16s.

I've read the Ukrainians are recruiting pilots from outside Ukraine......I've also read a couple retired US F16 pilots have volunteered...

From experience of talking to fighter and ground attack pilots in the past, they all operate in a symbiotic relationship covering for one another....without this cover, I wonder how effective they will be.

Hi. It sounds like we are making them fight not to win.

I was talking to a neighbor who used to be a serving soldier and he was up in arms over North Korea and China giving equipment to Russia.

I told him it's really no different than the west flooding Ukraine with equipment, weapons and training....

I said the west has been meddling in the Ukraine/Russia conflict for years and years, we've had trainers in Ukraine for well over a decade.

The two disputed regions are primarily Russian speaking people who wanted to be part of Russia, this is why the Ukraines were having problems with insurgency pretty much ever since the fall of the Soviet Empire.

We are witnessing the formation of a new group which will include North Korea, Russia, Iraq and China.....and this force will become the dominant force on the planet over time.

I watched a video this morning regarding these robot "dogs" that militaries are developing.....I saw that China has one with a weapon platform on it...

Like all RWS, they are flawed....if there is any sort of stoppage with the weapon or it runs out of ammo, it becomes useless.

Years ago we trialed a autonomous platform which would carry out a myriad of tasks one of which was being an RWS operated via goggles from a remote location....many times either the platform didn't reach it's objective or had some sort of malfunction or the RWS link didn't work....

There are jamming systems which put into use renders all sorts of signals useless...these systems aren't in use in the Ukrainian conflict as they are not selective, they jam all signals-friend or foe....

Another high spot in mans way of figuring out more clever ways to kill the enemy, or at least make them keep their head down for a few moments.

Can it reload itself on the fly? Or is it just a big clip that can only be reloaded by infrantry men ?

All weapon malfunctions and reloading must be done manually....not just by infantry....anyone qualified can do it.

Are you struggling with 4 letter words now? Or... Did you prefer the word "Magazine"?
I've often heard the magazine referred to a "clip"

Most RWS are belt or drum fed so they can hold more rounds...the single 30 round magazine on the robot in the video wouldn't be very practical.

Sometimes while deployed I'd ask some operators how they liked the RWS on their vehicles and they all said they were OK until they weren't....if there was a stoppage or it ran out of ammo, some poor sap had to sort that out....generally under fire in an exposed position...

The concept of the autonomous support vehicle for our unit was sound, the execution wasn't.....it had to have perfect conditions to be effective.

The virtual goggle controlled RWS was awesome while it was on a range....it was just like a video game.

This is the future of warfare. AI controlled explosive carrying drones.

There will be some sort of mass jamming ability even if they make these robots autonomous....

Sadly there will always be a warm blooded soldier with a weapon in their hands killing one another in any future war.....

We are watching a "near-peer" war right now in Ukraine and even with a lot of drones and automated weapons systems, there's still a lot of blood being spilled by the militaries using them....

The west has hyper-boosted Ukraine's capabilities and this may force Russia into making harsh decisions and escalating the war.

It's one thing to give them defensive capabilities, it's another to give them offensive capabilities with the caveat of not using them offensively....

The Ukraine/Russian war is a huge financial sinkhole with no end in sight.

Fighting wars is expensive and the west is funding this one 100% even though our own countries are in a state of economic ruin.

This is another chapter in how to destabilize and then take control of whatever the purpose is for the end game to play out. A means to an end for control and dominating the world one piece at a time. As financial resources are depleted then the opportunities to exploit lesser countries becomes apparent. But.. what do I know? Who knows how much influence has distorted my view of reality.

I think western countries boosting Ukraine honestly thought (think) it is the best course of action to stop the Russian incursion...

The sad part of it all is the west started the issue in the first place...we've had western advisors and trainers in the Ukraine for well over a decade and have been arming and equipping Ukrainian troops fighting Russian backed troops for years and years.....well before Russia invaded and captured Crimea.

Once the prospect of Ukraine becoming a NATO member came into focus, Russia decided to move. I think Russia thought they would be welcomed with open arms as liberators.....they were wrong......obviously...

But I was surprised at how many Ukrainians fled their homeland instead of helping mount a defense or assist in someway....

It appears some people in Ukraine will choose personal survival over the level of nationalism required to become a soldier that defends Ukraine.

Perhaps they look at the odds of survival as an unworthy risk. Perhaps they don't want to become another casualty in a war they never wanted in the first place. Perhaps they don't want to put themselves in the path of death and destruction that ultimately cost them their lives and everything they wanted to protect and preserve in this lifetime.

With all the pre planning taking place over a decade then it simply points to the inevitable... the powers that be have decided were going to have a war. So, let's get a lot of military resources costing billions into an area and see what culminates.
