Russia and Ukraine

That was also part of his posturing. He felt like despite our being the biggest payer with the most assets, he got little support from members. This wasn't new to his administration. He just had had enough of us dumping $$ into the world for diminishing returns.

I was in the EU in the 90s. More specifically Hungary and the Czechs.

The efforts leading up to their inclusion was how much $$ would we pour into airports, infrastructure etc. Just to be able to use them strategically. Many of the leaders were Russian holdouts. They became very rich joining our side. We have yet to see any of their assets be put to use for us. But they have world class airports now.
I agree, NATO countries have been riding the apron strings of the US for a long time and need to step up their game and start spending their allotted GDP...my own country included...they have allowed our military to almost become ineffective by not putting any resources into it's development.

Pulling out of NATO would have still been a disaster....

It seemed that everywhere I deployed (and there were a lot of places) I ran into Americans (military or civilian) who where there for some purpose-mainly to do with resources . It was and still is in the best interest of the US to have a united band of countries standing behind them even if they are a small insignificant country, they all have some sort of trading strength.

If the US were to go it on it's own, all the little dogs would be out biting at it's heels.

You might call it nuts. But it seemed to work. N Korea never launched another middle after his efforts. Now they launch about monthly.

Whatever you want to say about how he death with Putin, seemed to work. He got Israel back to working with us

So if that's nuts. Biden needs to being a better but
My stupid autocorrect function. Sorry guys. I actually am literate most of the time.

There was even talk of the former leader of WW2 Germany asking the allied forces to join his forces in neutralizing Russia....

I think they dropped the A bomb in Japan to avoid a ground invasion which would have cost millions of lives (mainly allied forces) as the Japanese forces turned Japan into a defenders' paradise.
I didn't know about the Germany thing, that's very interesting. If you have any recommended reading on that I would be interested.

On invading Japan, that's the propaganda line that we did it to force a surrender. Problem is that doesn't jive with the details:

1. Firebombing was the worse thing the Japanese population faced in the war. It killed many more than the atomic bombs. There are documents where American strategic planners turned the bombing to population centers specifically to weaken their resolve to continue the war.

2. The Japanese had agreed to a surrender around the time the bombs were dropped. The only issue as far as terms was the Emperor. Japanese officials claimed that their troops would never surrender the emperor, so talks were under way to allow the emperor to remain but in a ceremonial status.

3. While the Japanese surrender was being negotiated, the relationship between the Allies was going south and many worried Russia would fight on against the Allies. Truman felt Stalin was an animal who only understood force.

So if you look back at the situation, there was no real strategic reason to drop the 2 atomic bombs on civilians (factories in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were long destroyed). So did Truman do the right thing or was he guilty of war crimes for testing a weapon on defenseless civilians? IMHO he was right and even knowing what I know now I would have dropped at least the first one. I say this because the hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers would have died fighting the Russians, not invading Japan. The Russians had to be convinced that they could not beat what was left in Europe to fight, the bombs did that.

Something else. It's all in the news today about Biden giving Putin the go-ahead on minor incursions into Ukraine. The truth is the Russians have already been in Ukraine. You don't line up 100K troops at the start line and run into battle like it's a marathon or something. They have been poking around, observing defenses, looking to map AA & SAM sites, poking around critical infrastructure, etc. Biden knows the media will eventually find out about this. Heck Putin may even leak it if it will make Biden look weak.

So good intuition Biden, not so eloquent execution though.

About Hitler asking Roosevelt and Churchill to team up with his forces and destroy the Soviets, I read that in a war diary somewhere a long time ago...I can't recall which one though and it might have been a point of view from an individual rather than a documented source...funny how those things stick with you?

I do remember reading D-Day was conducted to take the heat off Russia and in turn Russia would help fight the Japanese. I remember reading the Soviets declared war on the Japanese and that in itself was a significant factor in the Japanese surrender.

?? however, it has been quite a while since I was in the history books..I have a degree in military history but like all things, when we don't use it, we lose it.

I sure hope all the efforts countries are putting into deterring Russia from invading works and Russia stands down...

At least we know China will keep quiet until after the Olympics are done...

This could get very ugly, very quickly...

At least the UK pay the more than the 2.24% GDP

Germany are loathe to be seen as warmongers following history
So their 1.53% is about par for the course

Personally, I say Putin goes in. I can't see doing all of this and then stepping down. Putin has set a very high threshold and I can't see the face-saving step back for him. At this point he pretty has to go in and do something, not sure what his real prize is.

NATO was created (in the late 1940s, at the height of the Cold War tensions) to contain Russia, so obviously they don't want NATO in their back door. NATO is interesting. They have a lot of standards and systems integration so they can field a pretty formidable force. You've all heard of the NATO round, but it's also tanks and planes. There is an integrated theater system that basically puts every plane tank or other asset on a viewing screen so they can maintain order even in a serious battle. The F-35 was developed to be a NATO fighter and all of the members had to buy some. Remember when Trump was saying NATO members weren't paying their share? They are supposed to spend 2% of GDP on NATO weapons (I think). So while NATO may cost the US a lot of money, it is a win-fall for the military-industrial complex.

The expansion of NATO countries is to isolate Russia and squeeze it into submission. The thought being to keep order by creating a bigger team. The problem is military power is compromised when everyone has a piece of it to give away. And part of NATO is the "an attack on a NATO member is an attack on all NATO members" which has drawn us into some tense situations we really don't want to be in. To this date, the collective power of NATO has only been called upon once and that was by the US after 9-11.

NATO's North American Command is located here in Norfolk, VA.
NATO would wipe the floor with Russia and China in conventional warfare and both of them know that. NATO has more war time experience troops than Russia or China. Real world training is the only real training and U.S forces has a lot. They are still doing military operations all over the world today mostly in Africa gaining more and more experience.

Russia and China are going the route of espionage, hacking and distribution (political, supply chains and social economic’s) without nukes China and Russia combined would get steam rolled over by pure air superiority and wouldn’t have a chance of leaving their country to attack another foreign soil. Would we be able to occupy China or Russia unlikely but we would make sure they wouldn’t be allowed to leave with any real military force intact.

...and those flowers are probably covering her horns.
You don't want to know how wrong you are. I was a married man when I was there. But there was an amazing amount of stunning women in Eastern European countries. Not gonna lie. I reached out last year to one of my old gang that lives there. Asked how things were for good women to consider.

Hot dang they are worth the price!
