The M-777 is a stellar gun....it was designed by the Marines.
The only issue is it's big, heavy, slow to get into action and the crew is exposed to enemy fire.
It uses computer targeting and has a lot of different rounds including the Excalibur round which is GPS guided but very expensive $40k a pop....apparently the Ukraine gunners were firing the Excalibur rounds we sent just like normal ordinance and not using their GPS....pretty expensive round for that use....
With Excalibur they will reach out in excess of 40kms.

They weren't using GPS because of lack of training? Or because they can be more easily discovered by countermeasures?
I saw that they have to fire and then move. So I suspect they are trying to stay as stealth as possible with 10 tons of metal and 3000 lbs of boom material.
Why are they not just using the non GPS rounds? Seems like a waste.
I heard they were trained but in order to use the GPS system they have to have some sort of "eyes on" the target so it can be lased and identified...they are probably not set up for that. It is typical for this gun to "shoot and scoot" but the training has to be bang on to be effective...
As for using the Excalibur rounds as regular rounds, they might be getting desperate and grabbing whatever is coming off the truck.

I would think the drones that have been used so effectively would be able to broadcast precise GPS locations.
Normally they would but the drone operator has to be tied into the artillery computers....which I highly doubt they are...
Excalibur is accurate within 1 meter at 40 kms...(if used properly).

Seems like the DO could simply relay GPS data by comm.
In a perfect world most likely but the Ukraines don't have Predator or Reapers, their drones are low tech in comparison.
And I'm sure they aren't setting up FOO parties...Even with western training, Ukraine still follows Russian doctrine...blow the crap out of targets then go in and mop up....

I watch clips of them dropping grenades into sunroofs with cheap ass throw away drones.
It wouldn't seem difficult to to attach a pinger to one and troll for targets. What maybe $60 per drone to do.
Could work...I know if they were fighting the west, the jammers would be dropping drones like flies...

If China invades Taiwan I'll probably agree. If it's a European War, I don't think it will spread to the World.
I do totally think China and N. Korea are testing Biden. It's no accident what they are doing.
If a war in Europe occurs, it will quickly become a world war...Russia won't just roll over and I think nukes will come into play once they are close to being defeated....
All the other bad actors will also see this as their chance to settle things...China, Iran and North Korea will all see this as an opportunity...

I'll humbly disagree on the use of nukes. I don't think Putin wants be vaporized over Ukraine.
And I can only hope that if I'm wrong, we have the tech to kill anything launched.

I have noted of late the media is now referring to the Ukraine defenders as "Allied Forces" in a sort of throw back to WW2 and the allies I'd imagine....
I now see just how stubborn the Russian leadership is by their resolve to keep pressing this invasion even in the face of the negativity and condemnation of what they are doing.

I guess there are a few foreign troops operating in Ukraine...hopefully none of them get captured as that would definitely spark an already tense international incident...
