San Diego Hoons...10News // Lane Splitting Story

These drivers are probably the same ones that ride for miles in the "passing lane" while traffic backs up behind them and peeps pull bs moves like go across 3 or 4 lanes of traffic to swoop around the rolling traffic jam they are creating. All the time saying " I'm going the speed limit, if they want by me, they can pass on the right".

Oh yeah, flicked a nerve on that note~!~ Hate having to go around slow iggs in the left lane.

Anyway, can't split lanes here...they'll give a reckless driving ticket.

its a two part problem.....

1. cagers get pissed when a motorcycle wakes them from them traffic induced coma.

2. riders splitting lanes at 80mph, is the equivilant of doing a stand up in rush hour...unsafe and will piss off drivers.

the roads here in good ole missouri are so narrow you cant split lanes even if it was legal, our roads are pizzz..

All the foregoing having been said, and conditions permitting, I share lanes.

It's one of the few benefits of riding a motorcycle in a cage-eat-cage world.

Sometimes I'll do it for a distance then claim a space in a full lane for myself. Sometimes traffic just seems 'angry'...it's during these times I opt out of the lane-sharing scenario.

Interesting, also, is at least here in SoCal, some freeways have wider lanes than others. For example, through sections of OC and LA, the 405 has VERY narrow lanes; and conversely, the 805 here in SD, south of the 8 has very generous lanes.

Another practice we engage here is called 'threading traffic'; during which the motorcyclist advances to the limit line at a traffic light or stop sign. I don't know what the rules are in other states on this particular activity, but it's a huge time-saver and generally (if you're an experienced, stable rider), very safe...as traffic on both sides of you has come to a complete stop.

One thing is absolute. While "sharing," one can never EVER take a break from an enhanced or heightened level of caution.

They'd put someone in jail here if caught on the wrong note. Pretty strict about stuff like that. I was riding behind a fella that cut down the side passing two stopped cars that were going straight so he could turn right at the light, had plenty of room and still inside the white line (still had the entire shoulder if needed)...and he got a ticket because there was not a designated turning lane for him to go down.

Sounds like a great deal in CA...I'd commute every day on the bike, no doubt.

Guess they (in CA) gotta make up for all the other things like extra emissions, etc.

I never lived in a state the splitting was legal. Even if i did i wouldn't do that. I lived in the DC area for 32 years and comutted the beltway several hours each day. Ive seen what happens ou there and all the crazy stuff you could think so and it scares the hell outta hell out of me. There is now way i would try it.

Here we go again. I split aka share lanes ALL the time. If you don't live here or ride here then you don't understand , don't take wrong. We do it the cops do it and the cages , at least the cagers that are from here, know it and move over for you. It's the out of stater's that you have to watch out for because they don't know it. WHEN IN ROME DRIVE AS THE ROMANS DO.

re: lane splitting in california... is it legal to cross the double yellow lines of the car pool lane with a motorcycle?

i know that when traffic is moving slow, bikes weave back and forth (between the car pool and fast lane) all the time but what about when there's no traffic and you just want to enter the car pool lane. do we have to follow the same guidelines as a car?

i lane split all the time in so cal. i'm not sure how safe i am but i usually split lanes when traffic is below 55 mph and i'll go about 5-10 mph above what moving traffic is going.

you can never cross the double yellow, I have followed motor units when they are doing it and have never done stopped. But know you can not hopin and out of the OHV lanes.

Hmmm, let us do some math:

economy bad + gas $$ up + bike cost + generally good weather = more bikers

If 30% took the CMSP class and only a 10% increase in TOTAL fatalities with a 400% increase in riders.

Dang, we are doing pretty good. Lane splitting or not.

OBTW - I taught CMSP for 4 years... Lane splitting is "tolerated" here, not actually legal.

Maybe some signage along the roadways informing "out-of-staters" of the rules would be helpful???

I absolutely agree with you...not actually legal, but not actually illegal, either.

Here's a quote from the CA Motorcycle Safety Handbook...

Lane Sharing (Page 15)

Cars and motorcycles each need a full lane to operate safely. Lane sharing is not safe.

Riding between rows of stopped or moving cars in the same lane can leave you vulnerable. A car could turn suddenly or change lanes, a door could open, or a hand could come out of a window. Discourage lane sharing by others. Keep a center position whenever drivers might be tempted to squeeze by you. Drivers are most tempted to do this:
• In heavy, bumper-to-bumper traffic.
• When they want to pass you.
• When you are preparing to turn at an intersection.
• When you are moving into an exit lane or leaving a highway.
