Think I Suck...

Hmm, well I'll be out riding my usual mountains, and twisty roads this week, after doing it over the past 2 days this weekend...

I'm really not sure why my knee just isn't touching down... I've read all the arse half off, knee falls into position, head where the mirror should be... just no scrap-idge...

What am I doing wrong?... What are other people's knee down techniques... OR am I expecting too much after only having been riding the Busa for the past 2 days? OR maybe I'm trying to hard and not letting it flow properly...

Then again... I might not be totally off the bike... Will go out tomorrow and report back...

Thoughts?... besides:

My knee doesn't touch either.

I wouldn't worry about it.

just lean over far enough to touch your elbow and your knee will surely follow suit

What's the point of getting a knee down? If your lines and body position are perfect, what else really matters?

Having a knee dragging doesn’t always mean you are cornering to your best potential.

I have been behind people that can corner like a mofo and their knee isn’t all that low.

I have seen other people that they are concentrating sooooo much and trying to get a knee down just for the sake of getting a knee down that their balance is all off, they are leaning off the bike more than they should and screws up their line.

Just ride. when you have confidence in the bike, and your tires, and the road you are riding and your own abilities your cornering will get better and better, if the knee gets low in the process cool, if it doesn’t don’t worry about it.

Pretty much guarantee if you are riding JUST for the sake of trying to get you knee as low as possible and that is your primary goal you will probably end up wrecking.

Getting a knee real low is a natural occurring event of good riding skills and good cornering.

just my perspective for what it is worth

MY KNEE IS ALMOST THERE BUT, I AGREE WITH THE LAST GUY! YOU GOT TO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOU BIKE, TIRES, AND THE ROAD. AND THE MORE YOU RIDE THE THAT SAME ROAD EVENTUALLY IT WILL HAPPEN! JUST DON'T FREAK WHEN IT HAPPENS!

FINALLY got a nice weather day... and ya know what I caught up a ZX10R (which I didn't see until I was about 3/4 up the mountain) and I wasn't getting my knee down... so screw it for the time being... I must be doing something right...

The footpeg position makes it difficult to touch ground with knee.  Too far forward!  When you stick knee out it doesnt necessarily get closer to the ground like it does if the footpeg is farther back!  When the peg is further back the point of the knee gets closer to the ground at less lean angle when you stick it out there!  Where as on the missile,  the calf and knee area sticks out.  Not really getting closer to the ground at less lean angle.

Anyway!  That's lamb explanation!  Part of the beauty of the bike are its sporty demeanor without the extreme sporty rider position.

Enjoy the effort though!!

 Lamb does!

Ehem.. Lamb is one of the riders that I see taking corners like you wouldn’t believe.. and he seems to do it effortlessly.

He is not leaning off the bike or any of that. He is just riding how he feels comfortable..

I however will break a sweat trying to keep up with him..

Still don’t know how you do it Lamb lol..

Getting a knee down should not be the primary goal.  Learning proper body position should be.  Amoung riding a racing line, throttle control and brake control.

By leaning off the bike, the bike leans less than if you sit straight up.  Which means at the same speed, leaning off is safer because the contact patch is closer to the center of the tire.  BUT, leaning off incorrectly or too far, compromises your stability.  You don't want to slip, when you're hitting the apex at 110mph....

That said, I have never dragged knee on the street, even though I hang off.  Its just not safe on the street.

Have you done anything with your suspension?? The busa's stock suspension settings are not safe at knee dragging speed. Get your ride height adjusted, then start adjusting rebound and compression to make the bike feel good underneath you.

I have been working on getting faster at trackdays and have finally dragged my knee through an entire corner.

My advice.  If you really want to drag knee.  Goto a trackday and have some of the control riders follow you and give you advice.  Once you know you are doing the right things, then you can go faster and faster.

I'm by no means any expert in the whole "knee dragging" stuff...if my knee goes down, the bike must be falling over on me LOL but I've got plenty of friends that say track days helped 'em get it down for the first time...not usually the first track day either; takes some time...

If you're interested in really doing that, consider taking it to the track...I understand once you do track days, there's no comparison to street riding

It took me 9 years riding sport bikes.

And 6 trackdays before my knee dragged through an entire corner. Being conservative helps keep you from crashing

The ball of your foot should be on the edge of the peg with your heel touching the heel guard. Your inside b%ttcheek should be all the way off the seat with your elbows bent and hands relaxed. You should be looking through the corner (unless your last name is Rossi) and you will eventually drag knee. The point is to have your bike up as straight as possible while dragging knee to get the most traction from the side of the tire and not the very edge. BE CAREFULL WITH THE THROTTLE CAUSE IF YOU GET TOO GREEDY WITH IT YOU WILL SLIDE OUT! Not many good riders can do this on the street and you shouldn't be too dissapointed if you don't ever do it.
