Who Rode Today?

Ex-500GP racer Garry McCoy has a cafe near my new place. Needless to say we are now on first name terms…

As a very keen MotoGP fan (I’ve flown from Australia to the UK to watch Rossi’s win at Silverstone) and a huge fan of the old 500 2-stroke era bikes, to be living up the road from someone who was on the podium 6 times in a season with 3 wins is a big deal for me. To find out we have a few things in common and a mutual friend away from bikes is nice. If you had no knowledge or interest in bikes, Garry is still a realy nice guy.

He must be really something to ride with...just following him around a complicated road must be very entertaining...

did this very recently - rode down to see the crash site of Eddie Cochran - killed in a car crash in 1960
Gene Vincent survived his injuries. I always liked Eddie's music taken far too young

Those were quite the dust clouds rolling past you...it looked like a picture of the midwest in the '20s
It was horrible. A lot of the Advanced & Intermediate bailed early on the day.
Some of them joined us in the Novice group, which explains the crowd

But for me it was perfect. Nice-n-easy after a fork refresh, plus I bought a suspension session, so the bike was pretty alien to me - or so I thought.

I adore this bike

The same suspension guy (JJ from suspensionmatters.com) recommended 34 up front and 30 rear, suggesting a higher PSI up front will help the bike flick. I found this to be true - a little embarrassed I hadn't thought of it myself. Was running 32 f/r prior.

A rider from the Advanced group described this track as a classic 600 cc track. ("Why'd you bring a baseball bat to a sword fight?") But I get that all the time. Some of the coaches joked they wished the had a Busa - not as vulnerable to windy conditions.

My times in the afternoon sessions improved, and so did the wind/weather.
I imagine some would argue tire warmers would help, but on street tires? I'll wait until the bike is track-dedicated.

Got in a very blustery 140 miles today on the Busa. Was intending to ride a bigger loop but the gusty side winds were a PITA above 70. They weren’t so much off and on occasionally as they were constant, hard blasts then nothing, then a hard blast again then nothing, never letting up. Not fun!

At a stop for 20 minutes or so by a sharp horseshoe kind of corner I saw only four bikes, a white Triumph triple with slicks and several crash bars on either side of the plastics, and two very loud KTMs. One rider (newbie I’m sure) riding a Yamaha mid size cruiser, not known for good cornering prowess, came around too fast, felt obligated to look over at me and wave anyway and immediately lost the apex swinging wide crossing the double yellows towards an oncoming…motorcycle. The oncoming motorcycle was luckily slowing to pull over where I was which gave the lucky noob rider time and space to pull back into his lane. If a car had been coming…. Lucky guy considering he’s learning to ride a motorcycle on an ill handling over weight slow as hell cruiser.
