I remember riding a friend's carburetted 98 R1, I had it to low 170's on the speedometer, and it was slowly climbing.
Impressive for it's day, but quickly and rightfully soon overshadowed by the Hayabusa(even though it wasn't a fair comparison).
The R1 held off pretty much everything else...then the Gsxr1000 came along in 01.
I'll still take a Suzuki or Kawasaki any day, as until late 2000's(and after with restrictions removed), Yamahas(and Hondas) good as they are, only make power high up.
Give me a Gsxr or Ninja with a big midrange hit And enough up top to smoke R1s and cbrs every time.
But, the R1 is an iconic machine that I'm glad is still around.
