16/42 gears = low trap speeds

First thing is quit trying to calculate everything, are you an engineer? Just get out there and practice on your launches.

I may not be the fastest guy out there but I weigh 300LB and have a consistent 1.6-1.7 60FT times running 10.4?'s at right over 130 on the limiter in 3rd but I have been experimenting with short shifting to 4th and nothing is changing. Everything on the bike is stock as far as gearing.

You main problem is you are trying to calculate too much just go ride the damn thing and it will get better.

One thing i have a problem with is getting to full throttle fast enough plus I am still foot shift the bike. I am going to work on getting into the 10.3's before i lower the bike or change the gearing.

We could add a couple of more times at LACR to the list I posted here.  Somewhere around 300 pulls on the bike so far.  So, I sure am out there riding it.
And, if you are pulling those 60' times on a bike set up for serious canyon carving like mine is and no lowering or strapping on your bike, please tell me how you are doing that?
But, I do agree. It is difficult to get the throttle open fast enough and not pull the mother of all wheelies.  I do not consider riding the clutch out as an option since I can not afford to be replacing clutches and the touch on the throttle has eluded me.
But, perhaps 300 runs over a four month period is not enough seat time?  I never owned a bike remotely like the Busa before and it has been 40 years since I rode dirt bikes which pulled the front wheel up easily.
Still my trap speeds remain higher using only three gears (+1T on the rear sprocket)  than when I use the shorter 16/42 gear set. And I definitely feel that calculating gear ratios and optimum shift point and all that is an important part of drag racing. I am not an engineer, but, I am my own crew chief and mechanic etc.

Get a strap... it only takes a second to install at the track and you should knock off a  tenth in you 60 foot  and that will knock off 2 tenths in the 1/4 mile ..Tetge after lots of runs on my bike i was thinging i had hit the wall as for as ETs and mph (6.50s@108 in the 1/8 mile)  I just just about gave up but i'm glad i didn't , i run 6.20@114 now...No changes in the bike just my riding changed..I don't mean this to be hard but you saying i can't i can't   is some of the reason your not going faster...Please don't take that the wrong way because i was doing the same thing and truth be known most people do the same thing .. Now about lower the bike and still riding twistys ... Lower the back and the front the same amount and it will still handle the same..The only thing that changes is the ground clearance.. also get a Tobin seat , it really helps with your 60 foots ...Tetge don't give in to your brain...Keep trying !! trust me you will get there....

I ran in Tucson on the Busa since putting the turbo on. It was sad really. I won't have the air shifter on till next week. So, I'm trying to pull feet up onto the pegs while launching and it feels like I'm wearing lead boots LOL. It was like that before the Turbo, and now it's impossible. I ended up with 2 near identical runs at 10.86 and 10.87 @ 148mph. Once the shifter is on my 60' times should drop by about a second cause I won't be trying to "persuade" her to stay straight coming out of the hole. I'm hoping for an honest low 9 second run at about 160 or so. For Tucson given the power she puts out, that should be about right.

I went one tooth lower in the front but since putting the turbo on I'm thinking about going back to stock or maybe even one over in the front... any comments as to how that will work out?

i've been to the track 4 times. my best pass is 10.10 at 138mph. a local girl ran her busa 9.38 at 150. she has lowered, air shifter, k&n, muzzy full system and a fuel map. im not that expieranced at all and just tryin to get better. but some of these times are pretty slow besides taking in all track condition cases. and i run a shinko rear tire for the only reason that its cheaper than burnin up my street tire. my battalax hooks up as good if not better than the shinko. the shinko is real cool natured. seems that tetge, your problem is getting out of the hole. and the only way to get better at that is slippin the clutch. bike should be revved to like 4500 then when ready to launch, the throttle should be pinned and your workin that clutch. good luck buddy. and most importantly, have fun.

I do not understand top of third gear in the 1/4 mile. I am at 10,000 rpm in third gear in the 1/8 mile. Last time I had a chance to run 1/4 mile I was in fifth gear at 1/4 mile. Gearing is 16/42 with taller profile Pierelle Super Corsa rear tire. I would suggest better launch and a shift light. The shift light helped me most to get sonsistant runs, after I installed it I found that I was short shifting. I never saw the light come on the forst 2 runs I made with it at it at 10,000 rpm., this allows shift below limiter and seems to be where the most HPis at. I launch at 6,000 rpm and still sissy the clutch for a few feet, then balls to the wall. My Busa has, 4 inch extension, Brock Hindle Street Megaphone, PCIII USB, Air box mods, Stock air filter, lowered 2 inchesand punp gas. Best 1/8 so far is 6.452 @ 115 MPH. 60 foot 1.7's No air shifter or NOS.

I am running 17/41 gears when I am at the top of 3rd in the 1/4. 3rd goes approx 133.5 with 17/41 gearing and my best trap ever was 133. I returned to stock gearing the other day and it made no difference that I could see as I ran about the same times as usual. But third will go about 137 or so with the stock gearing. A completely stock Busa could go through the 1/4 at many tracks using only first through third gears.

My bike - even stock ALWAYS shifted into 4th...
I am guessing that stock you trapped more than 137. That is why I said at many tracks a stocker will go through in 3rd. With a skilled rider and good DA, stockers have been reported to go over 140 and that would definitely require a shift to 4th.

My very first time ever was 10.36 @ 136 in the 1/4 and it had shifted to 4th but right at the traps.

After a few more times i was getting 140-142 with stock gearing.

Used to get 144 with 2 intakes cams (see my ad in for sale section).

Now 148ish with a 1397 that isn't tuned quite right...

I am not that good of a rider though...
