16/42 gears = low trap speeds

ROACH,

Once again your posts make NO SENSE and have ZERO RELEVANCE to the thread.

They are talking about 1320 aka...1/4-mile racing.  NOT 1/8th-mile little kid BS!

I do not understand top of third gear in the 1/4 mile. I am at 10,000 rpm in third gear in the 1/8 mile. Last time I had a chance to run 1/4 mile I was in fifth gear at 1/4 mile.
You guys missed his WEIGHT post because he is is 300lbs. It takes a lot more power to accelerate more weight so......TOP OF THIRD is probably right FOR HIM!

DONT LISTEN THIS GUY NOBODY RUNS 1/4 IN 3RD THAT DONT EVEN MAKE SENSE. IF THATS THE CASE YOU NEED 2 GEAR IT DOWN.TELLING YOU RUN THRU 1/4 MILE IN 3RD? THAT HAS 2 BE THE WORST INFO I HAVE HEARD THIS YEAR ON A DRAG BOARD. I HAVE RUN 16-42,43,+44 REAR COG 1 DOWN FRONT I WEIGYH 270LBS I GO THRU IN 5TH NEAR RED LINE IF YOU LEAVE IT IN 3RD ENTIRE 1/4 YOU WILL PROB EXPIRE A MOTOR DOING THAT.SOME TIRES CAN CHANGE THE MPH ALSO I WAS RUNNING GOODYEAR SLICK ITS TALLER TIRE SO BIKE GETS A FEW MORE MPH.YOU COULD ALWAYS BRING A DIFF SPROCKET 2 THE TRACK WITH YOU COULD CHANGE THEM BETWEEN ROUNDS EASY.

Damn....ROACH!

WTF are you smoking?  REREAD THE THREAD AGAIN BEFORE YOU POST AGAIN!

HE HAS NO SLICK OR WHEELIE BAR so.....that means he is taking off as quick as possible with HIS WEIGHT.  With that gearing the bike might not have enough power to pull him through to 4th gear.

FOR HIS SETUP and WEIGHT, 3RD GEAR MAY BE CORRECT FOR HIM. NO ONE IS TELLING HIM TO DO THAT, MAYBE THAT's ALL IT WILL PULL FOR HIM.

Do something usefull for just one thread and don't post in it.  I think your accident affected your BRAIN more than your body....

i think your advice sucks and really dont care what you think of my posts.well long as were stating what we think of each other i think your a smart mouth punk that dont know what hes talking about.:)

ROACH,

Are you reading the same thread as the rest of us?  Just curious because I didn't give any advice?
rock.gif

Smart mouth?
rock.gif
Hmmm....well if you mean CORRECT information then YES!  I am a smart mouth...
laugh.gif

Feel free to point out ONE thing I have posted that is INCORRECT.  Since I don't know what I'm talking about...

WTF....give it a rest.

Bone stock gearing will be at the top of third as you go through the traps, if your a descent rider and dont weigh a whole lot, you will just shift to fourth right before the finish.
gearing really doesnt do a whole lot on a stock bike if anything. you could be at the top of 3rd at a 138 mph or at the top of 5th and still be at 138 mph.
it really only comes into play on extended bikes with traction, gear that puppy down and slingshot out the whole, and then you might see a gain in mph. ( might )

you think gearing it down will increase mph?
rock.gif
?? gearing it down will decrease mph but might make it get a lower time.I ran 16+44 on cogs i weigh 270lbs i got 6.48 at 111mph.I think a stock busa is geared a little tall 4 drags.

It has been my experience that the stock gearing seems to work best with a basically stock bike. I tried a bunch of combos and none of them worked any better for me. And, the stock Busa will do about 137-138 at the rev limiter in 3rd, so, at my trap speeds I just use the first three gears. I searched all over the Busa boards and it seems that everyone agrees that the bike should be revved close to the red line in all gears for max performance, so, going through in third gear is the result.
My bike is ridden in the mountains and also across the desert (where I live) a lot where the roads are long and straight. Short gears are not really an option as far as I am concerned. And I am always running at 1/2 mile or higher elevation. In the mountains I go over 7000' and LACR is at 2710'. This impacts the trap speeds.
I do have a weight question? How much difference has been observed based upon weight reduction. For cars, you always hear that 100 pounds will make a 1/10th difference in the ET. Any formula or guesses about how much difference 10 or 20 pounds will make in the ET of a stock, approx, 550lb Busa?

It's hard to break it down on a bike because you have a lot more factors than a 11/12/13/14 second car. But from what I remember it's about 10-15lbs. for every tenth BUT.....

Depending on your launch and 60/330 times you can move weight around to LOWER your ET. For instance the BRICK that Brock sells. It puts the weight lower and closer up front to help launch harder. With equal traction you SHOULD be able to accelerate harder improving your time.

It's hard to tell at the higher elevation tracks like your are running on though. Your best bet is to test it and see because you won't get identical results as the sea level guys.
wink.gif

I knew there was another reason you were running in 3RD gear....7000' makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE. But hey I'm wrong and telling lies according to ROACH.

i been drag racing a long time. next time you go to a bike race thats 1/4 mile ask what gear they go thru in almost all will tell you 5th gear.what do you do in 1/8th just leave in first?? I think most stock bikes will do a little better if geared down a bit.mph is not as impotrant as time for me not hjow fast you go its how fast you get there that wins.I will stay off this thread im not into the name calling if somebody disagrees.

or has a diffrent opinion.

ROACH, you're missing the point of HIS post completely.  Reading comprehension OWNED you...
laugh.gif

Gearing it down does NOT guarantee a faster time in the 1/4, 1/8, etc...  To many factors to consider and JUST a gear change esp on a stock bike does not mean it's faster.  So it doesn't matter if you are in 3rd or 5th if you are both running a 10.0 or whatever.....

Are you sure you drag race. Cause it doesnt sound like it.
not everyone is goin through in fifth gear. my 12 is geared to the nuts and I am just barely seeing 5th, MPH did not change one bit from going down 1 on the  front and up 3 in the back. Thats a lot of gearing change and MPH is exactly the same and e/t might be .05 better. This has been my expierence on about 6 different bikes.
A busa I also pilot is one down on the front and were running dope and I am barely seeing 5th also. MPH is way up because of the dope.

dont worry about your mph focus on your et it does not matter what your mph is as long as you hit the finish line first
bingo looks like we have a racer in the house.so if somebody disagres there ignorant?hmm thats kinds well you know.
so a drag bike is better off to run the 1/4 in low gears or 4th is that what you are telling me.
rock.gif
how many drag bikes have you built from the frame up??how many motors??
