Roach you forget were talking street bikes not dragbikes, i.e. wheely bars vs no bar.
Of course one would want to use all gears in the 1/4 for the most performance, but do you know what it's like to ride a short wheelbase streetbike with no bars and geared that low ?
Wheelies big time, so what good is gearing it that low if 1st gear becomes useless ? Youll end up going slower if one cannot go WOT in first gear.

ok roach biest umm no busa owners we build them ourselves zx sorry bout the sandbox been there my self but just remember we ride 2 wheels unlike the cagers and be careful

any real racer knows that it dont mean sh*t about ur mph, its how fast u get there. u could run 10 flat at 137 come back do it again and run 9.94 at 137 no mph gain, thats what makes u faster. work on ur holeshot the first 60 ft is whole race anybody can go 140 mph, its getting out of the hole as fast as possible that matters

I asked ryan schnitz racing here is reply

Q-what gear should a recent model sport bike be in at finish of 1/4 mile if geared correct?

a-Kinda depends on the the bike, rider, weight, etc...

Most stock bikes should go through in 5th gear.

Exactly how good a 60' can you get on a stock chassis Busa with OEM tires and the suspension set firm for canyon carving? That is the way I ride into the drag strip and that is the way I race the bike. No one has ever been able to tell me what kinds of 60' marks they get absolutely stock. In the comparison test where Shine rode the Busa and the ZX-12R at Famoso, they just said that he was getting stock 60' times in the 1.7x range. Nothing specific.
I understand that to go faster I should optimise my bike for drag racing, but, I choose to leave it canyon carving ready. And it appears that in that state of chassis setup, it works best for me using stock gearing and going through the 1/4 in 3rd gear.

Tetge- I miss your stories with Brakelate. Update us where you guys are at now.
Just cause the shack is gone don't mean we don't want to hear it.

Let me tell you this. a stock bike means stock gearing. And there is no way in hell stock gearing will get you 5th gear in the 1/4 mile.

Thanks, me and Brakelate have sort of drifted away from the board since we were not sure exactly where our reports should be filed. In fact, we have expropriated part of our local Southern California Mustang message board and we are posting our stories there, since the truth has to be told.
But, since you ask ( I am #216 & Brakelate #236):

This is a true account of a ride I went on today with my Hayabusa. Brakelate and I went out to scuff in our new rear tires. I had a new Bridgestone BT-56 OEM tire and he had a new Shinko 003R. Although they were both 190/50 sized, his tire appeared much larger.
The report is that some how, Brakelate must have got some wires crossed because on the way back down from Wrightwood, where we checked out all the snow and skiers, he drifted off into some other universe and decided that we were at Road Atlanta and it was a regulation road race. I did my best to keep him in sight, even though my tire was sliding and my brakes were fading. From the bits and glimpses of him in action that I observed, it seems that his new inexpensive Shinko Korean motorcycle tire must work pretty well. But, it is apparent that he needs to find a crew to ride with who ride faster than I can. It is a shame that he has to constantly slow down and wait because I am so slow.
Hopefully there will be some other bikers who check in on this thread and who will be able to ride at Brakelate's pace.
After the ride, I was extremely grateful to still be alive. There was run off and rocks and loose sand and gravel and Coyotes and SUV's and ice and snow on the road. But we checked and he had NO chicken strips at all on his new back tire and I had big GIANT chicken strips on my back tire, but it is sufficiently scuffed in the middle so that I can go to LACR Saturday

And from Saturday:

LACR Sat, Part II of the Friday ride

I was owned, big time. And Brakelate even brings a pit crew and a camera crew to the strip, since he is a pro and he has groupies. I need to lose 50 pounds stat to even things up. The ZX-12R just has too much for me. It almost makes me want to remove my center stand and put the lower fairing back on and reduce the bike's weight as much as possible. But, no, I just need to lose 50 pounds, and I will be right there. We weighed both bikes and both bikes with their riders with all their gear, and the Kawasaki is substantially lighter than the Hayabusa with or without rider. Maybe tonight I can bring myself to scan some evidence.

And, the capper to the story is:

These are the pads I took out of my rear brake today. On Friday, before I rode up to the snow and back following Brakelate, the pads were basically almost new. When I got home, I was running metallic brakes and there was zero pad material left. Common decency keeps me from taking a pic of the rear rotor, but, I put new pads on it and just left it that way because new rotors are expensive. Funny the rear pads lasted 3200 miles and one 80 mile round trip to the snow and back and they were completely gone. And, it still stopped great with just metal on metal.

with stock gearing i can see top of 3rd or bottom of 4th, with stock gearing but most people go dow n1 in the front whe nthey buy it t omake it more snappy in the throtle which is like going up about 3 in the rear and that is a huge difference from stock that is why people r disagreing about what gear they go trough the traps, who cares just get on it and ride it like u stole it
biggrin.gif

i know it off subject but wheelie bars . a rider will never give his bike full potential if they can;t get out of the hole hard as hell, wheelie bars can give that potential
