Not much changes around here.

Except my pavement, they got rid of that.

Finally. Salvation after 20 miles of rattling my teeth loose.

The Buell on Beckwourth-Genesee Rd near Portola

It was much better suited for this type of riding

The strange consolation prize to that arduous 20-miles of gravel, was brand-new pavement, perfectly re-graded roadbed and built for motorcyclists.

Didn't see a single other car. This road runs 9 miles into the mountains and turns to gravel. No one has any reason to be on it.

Lot of train history up here. I wanted to swing by Portola's Western Pacific Railroad Museum, a huge railroad museum in Portola, but it's too freakin' hot to stop.

90 degrees at 5000 ft is manageable on the bike in motion, but not wandering around trains in full leathers

Another ride someday I'll swing by...

That's quite the scenic place to be riding....in some cases all your missing is a herd of cattle with cowboys and a chuck wagon...

This is the portion of this road that used to be gravel. Now it's knee-drag amazing.

Finally dropping out of the mountains and into the broad Sierra Valley north of Lake Tahoe. This broad agricultural valley at 4800 ft is ringed by mountain peaks and spans nearly 200 square miles.

Time to drop out of the Sierra Range and into the 99 degree heat.

Time to get ready for the next ride. We're headed to the Pacific Coastline next for mid-July.

The journey aboard the Hayabusa continues...

My 2021 Mystery Tour crew. These guys signed up for a motorcycle tour having no idea where they would be going & had a great time.

Coast Range Tour

My favorite motorcycle ride of the year has arrived, Headed out to the ocean. That's not really true, I love them all. But still, when it's 100 degrees inland, you want to be at the coast where it's 65.

But first, Tom running out of gas on the last ride prompted me to re-think carrying extra fuel. I rigged up a way to carry the fuel on the Busa using the original license bracket from the Hayabusa (I long since removed from the original fender) and a piece of bar stock from the local hardware store, plus some hose clamps and an ole MSR Fuel canister.

Bolt to the Givi Rack and call it done. That was almost too easy.

Nobody ever thinks they need extra fuel until they run out of gas.

In the house

But first, gotta ride Highway 121

Super fun with no traffic this early in the morning

Highway 121 is this squiggly line up and over the ridge into the Napa Valley

If you look closely at the 'fog shot', it matches this ridge. The right side of the ridge is Napa Valley, and the left side is the Central Valley, no fog.

Road List helps me keep the sequencing right. There's a second page for after lunch.

A couple brand-new bikes on this ride: Cathy was on her aging Honda CB900 earlier in the year when the stator went out in the middle of the ride, stranding her.
She showed up for this ride on a brand-new Kawasaki Z900

Dave came out from Colorado to ride with us.
Just graduated from college and was on this sweet 600 with an LSR Bar kit on it. No more clip ons.

My season pass holder Ken came out from Utah for another ride. He took a year off for Covid, but now that we're in post-covid times, is back riding with us again on nearly every tour.

Mount Veeder Rd is a backroad that rides along the top of the ridgeline overlooking Napa, great fun

Ken on his new KTM 890, sold his 1290 Super Duke and stepped down to this, Sweet looking ride. Ken used to have a Multi, got a new S1000, then went to KTM.

Surprising how many of the fellas have sold their BMWs & Ducati's to get KTMs.
Also surprising is a push by the fellas to migrate to smaller displacement bikes, going from 1290s to 890s. Our guys that ride a lot with us often make their bike buying decisions based on these motorcycle tours. They need a bike that can handle tight & twisty backroads, pack a wee bit of luggage, and all day comfort.
