The group veto'd an early start and everyone waited for the morning sun to warm up our mountain roads. We won't ride over 2500 ft though, staying well below the snow line at 4000 ft.
One-day-Luc rode up to meet us to ride for the day (he didn't want to ride in the rain yesterday), bringing his GF Monica with him. She's a corporate attorney and was on some tours with us back during covid but it's been a few years.
The plan is a relaxed light 200-mile day loop out of Jackson. We want to hit Wards Ferry Rd which has been closed for several years.
A road famous for how narrow it is, it's two-lane traffic on a bicycle-path-width-road. (The 4-5 leg on this map)
The snow line is that green color on the right side of this map. Long as we stay below that, we're good. Yosemite NP is not too far away either.
Headed back up Highway 26 up into the foothills above Jackson.
It's a blistery 38 degrees. Heated grips are expensive ($500 on this bike-thankfully, former owner put them on), but pay for themselves in about 2 seconds. And the pricey heated jacket.
The tour guide likes to say, No such thing as a cold rider - only an unprepared rider.
The surface is terrible, but paved, and it's the only north-south road at this elevation. To bypass it, we'd have to drop down in elevation and ride back up.
As if to taunt us, the last few miles is new pavement nearing Murphys, but the goat lasts about 5 miles.
We reached Murphys in one piece, there's a really cool ice cream shop here, but it was too early, and too cold for ice cream. Maybe next time. Shots from our last visit to Murphys.
