Afghanistan....

Seeing pictures of the Taliban wandering around the airport full of US aircraft which were disabled is a little surreal....I saw a picture of the Taliban posing with a very intact looking C-130 in the background and other pictures of very intact looking helos..

If it were me, I would have used a few pounds of C-4 in each one to make them a little less intact...

It's not too late for explosives....
An airport(kind of an essential and strategic military place), full of terrorists, with left behind tech and aircraft.
Boom, black spot in the sand.

I think now that the Taliban are securely in charge, the west will try and persuade them to use common sense in ruling Afghanistan or they will get sanctioned hard probably so much so their ability to rule will be made impossible...

Then walks in the "wild card" of China or some other large power nation who will seize this opportunity to gain an ally in the Taliban...

The US could have easily cratered the runways but I think they are hoping the rest of the people they weren't able to rescue will be allowed to leave once the airport is operational again..??

You hit the China nail on the head!

As to sanctions. I wasn't aware they had much to sanction. We could firebomb the Poppy fields. They don't have like a banking system.

.....China sent 300,000 troops to Afghanastan over a month ago.
Why? Oil? A huge army Needs oil.
Poppy fields? To supply/aka control Big Pharma, you know, the guys that lobbied all the control out of DC, right into their pockets.
Bidens bought by China.
Xi volunteering to lead the New World Order back in March.
Nah, couldn't be...I'm just a conspiracy theorist....

I'd like some way to see they sent in troops. That by itself would have made more reason to stay and add troops to begin that defense.

The oil in Afghanistan isn't that significant an amount, cost a bit to get it out, refined, and shipped around the OPEC waterways. I hope China tries. Let it break their backs.

That's just it, Joe pulled the troops out to make way for them...no big deal, just politics.

Is anyone else getting tired of us being accused of abandoning a people we spent 2500 lives, over a trillion dollars, and 20 years trying to get them to stand on their own?

I guess that is one way to look at it.

The other way to look at it is where would Afghanistan be today, if we flew in after 9/11, took some Al-Qaida leaders out and then again flew out. Followed that up by going as we did into their buddy Pakistan's back yard and took out Bin Laden. Then only went in there to clobber from the air if we saw a threat outside of their borders.

In short, where would Afghanistan be today if we did not interfere in their domestic civil wars, tribes, regimes etc.

I think the answer to all that is they would have been in a much better place than right now.

Maybe but I think a lot of women & girls would disagree with you. On whole, I wouldn't disagree with you though @jellyrug
The thing with that, it this has been their way of life...women in places like Afghanistan (and many other countries) are not "liberated" and have accepted this as their way of life...that it doesn't align with our way of life should have never been part of the equation...

Another way the west is ramming it's ideology down the throats of other societies...same as has always been done...nothing has changed in a 1000 yrs...and the result is always never better.

We'd think there would have been lessons learned after the destruction of all the other societies (Polynesians, Aborigines, Indigenous, etc).

I've not heard of any large build of of Chinese troops in Afghanistan....that would have made the news for certain and in big, bold letters. That large of a force would not be easy to hide.

As a guy who has been all over Afghanistan....other than providing a route to the sea, there is nothing worth fighting for there....minimal oil, lots of poppy fields for opium but they could be grown anywhere. Lots of grape farms and marijuana grows but nothing worth fighting or dying over.

I think all the women and children trying to escape would be a clear point that they are tired of being treated like animals and want a better life. It clear they do not accept that way of life and any one with some cognitive ability would feel the same whether they grew up in it or not.

They have social media internet they see how other live and they want the American way of life...

Same as many places where boot on the ground occurred....Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, all could have been "snatch, grab and destroy" missions instead of investing human lives and billions (trillions) of dollars in a lost cause...

I always looked at these missions as "ok, we've got the bad guys running, the country is in our possession....now what?" The "now what" part is really hard to get sorted out...western powers have yet to get that formula right and should stop trying.

Remember something very important, many of these people were never under Taliban rule as it has been 20 yrs since they ruled...

If the west had not gone in and stuffed our ideology into their heads, they would be content in how their lives were being lived....now that they've tasted McDonalds, it's hard to ween them from that...

What the west has done is created the avenue for a mass migration...right to their doorsteps...

There were a couple of news stories about it...that have since been conviniently buried.

No one stuffed anything down anyone's throats... like I said, they have the internet, social media, news etc they see how the rest of the worlds lives... they could have lived like that for a million years but humans feel pain, they understand stoning someone to death is wrong for petty barbaric religous laws. They want a better life... they were throwing their children over the walls to get medical attention and possibly a better life.

How many peasant revolutions have happen? They lived like animals for hundreds to thousands of years but got sick of it and this was far before news papers let alone the internet.
