I went to see James today. He was very alert, and he knew that he knew me. He kept referring to me in the third person while he was talking to me. It was good to see him up and about, well as much as he can right now.
He asked me very clearly "What's up?" when I entered his room. He had just finished dinner. He was moving his right hand around, but it was splinted so his hand movement was limited. I told him I was shopping for a new bike today. He asked what bikes I was looking at, then he told me I could take his for a ride. He was trying to convince me to buy his from him. I told him his was wrecked, but he kept insisting that he already fixed it. He was obviously frustrated that he couldn't get up. We called Cherie and ScooterGirl, and James kept asking them to go riding with him later today, or tomorrow.
His long-term memory is intact pretty well. His short term memory is somewhat of a different story. He's taking information that he hears, and mixing it up with other things he's recently heard. A few minutes after I told him the bikes I looked at today he started asking me how my 10R was doing. He said he saw it in a movie. There was no convincing him that he was confused.
I had him trying to use his right arm to get a water bottle from his table. He managed to move it enough to steady the bottle while he held it with his left hand.
In all, it was a good visit. He was pretty wiped out when I left. I helped the nurse put him back to bed, and he was out.
We'll be taking the dogs to see him tomorrow night around 6:30PM. He doesn't have any surgeries planned this time, so he'll be much more alert.
