Fixing oil suckage in 2003 (project for a friend)

I am not sure it is making less noise. A noise seems to be missing now, which was a tumbling sound, like a small screw inside a cover being knocked around. Now it is only the tapping. This sound began as a vibration which lasted about 2 or 3 weeks, then in one day got scary loud.....like now. But it made the engine sputter at high RPM once it got very loud, like +6k if my memory is right, and there was the tumbling sound I mentioned. I thought it was the CCT, then thought maybe Busas just vibrated wierd, then one day it was very bad and rough and I stopped riding:banghead:.

Amazingly, with all the ugly noises coming from it, the valves are in spec.

Tappet bucket on left - second one up from bottom - Looks like a dent in it about the width of the nose of the camshaft.

Look it and the rest of the buckets over real good along with the nose of the cam lobes, each side .

^^that link is getting blocked by my antivirus...

I ran the engine for a few minutes and listened with a stethoscope - the noise is everywhere but more pronounced on the top. I'm not sure what that means...but I'm hoping it's a bent valve or something that I missed the first time around.

looked at that pretty closely today - no dents, all tappets are dead flat on top, no scoring along the sides (Only checked the intake side - I'll do the exhaust tomorrow)

I havn't read the thread but what was squench?
and all the rod and mains set?
sound like valve hitting piston or piston hitting head

sorry what does "Squench" mean?

I didn't change anything with the rods - I didn't feel any play in the pistons and I did not go beyond removing the cylinder to change the rings. Pistons were not removed from the rods.

Small accomplishment: Got the new 49 tooth chrome bling-bling installed:

(Need to bend that license plate holder out a little or we're gonna have a real problem!)

Big setback today...as I was removing the engine, the lower bracket (where the lower engine mounting bolt goes through) broke off. I'm going to post some pics tomorrow. too pissed off to think straight right now.

That would be the squench...I don't think he checked that.

No I did not - Thanks for the definition - how exactly do you check that?

Here's pics of the damage.

Can this be welded? Is the frame done for?
:banghead:

It can be welded, but needs to be done by a pro...or it won't hold. Needs to be tig welded.

woo-hoo...
I found the sound!

you can see where the valves are hitting the piston pretty obviously in the picture...

This was not obvious at all in the original viewing, but these were the heavily gunked valves, so it makes sense that there is a problem.

Next question is how difficult is changing valve guides? I'm going to replace the valves as I assume my earlier straightness test was flawed. I figure to save frustration I'll do the guides, seals, and valves all at once.
