I use to run 86 with stock timing including not using the 5th gear map (ECU Editor). Once I used the 5th gear map and added 5' of timing, 89-90 octane. Like it has been said over and over again, use the lowest octane you can get away. Once you reach 12 to 1 compression use 90 octane, 13 to 1 or higher should use 92-93 octane. My experience shows to be pretty close.
Part of the reason you might use higher octane is to compensate for crappy fuel which may have contaminants or even water in them. Not uncommon.
