Gen 1 owners, what octane do you run?

What octane level do you run on the street?

Now that I'm almost a year wiser and fuel's $3+, I'm going to 87.

Always 87 i wised up over the years. Bike is tuned from factory for 87. Running that gives best mileage as well as performance. Some people still don't believe. Get the bike tuned to run 92 and it will run amazing on that just like it does factory on 87

My bike is an 07 and I have always run 93. However, at my next fill up, I'm going to try the 87 and see for myself if I feel or see a difference whether positve or negative. If I don't like the 87, I can always switch back tom 93.

Ran super on my 05, switched to 87 and it runs better. Reg for me

I always thought paying a little extra for the added octane was money ahead....but recently I've heard some of your opinions of running 87 and actually getting better performance.

By going with a higher octane, you're displacing fuel with chemicals that make the fuel harder to ignite.

The only reason why you can get more power with a bike tuned for higher octane is by doing things like advancing the ignition timing, which would otherwise increase risk at preignition. The fuel itself doesn't contain more power. It's the opposite.

Completely pointless to run anything higher than 87 on a gen1. My busa runs best on 87.

This comes from a guy who always endlessly used premium then I saw the light.

I run mine with premium only because that is what it was tuned with by frank at powerhouse. I think lol. I might want to double check that.

I use Shell V Power 91 octane.

My manual (2006) calls for at least 87 octane, or higher..

I find that the premium gasolines have more and better cleaning additives than the regular gasolines.
It only cost me about $1.50 more per fill up for the premium, so I go for it.

That's the rub. Raising the octane literally displaces gasoline (yes, this includes ethanol). You are paying more for fuel that resists combustion in order to avoid knock. It's useless unless your timing / boost / temps, etc requires / tuned for / needs higher octane for safety margin.

Joe average on the street seems to think higher cost = better fuel. That's not the case. It's also why you'll get better fuel economy with the lowest octane that your engine is designed for.

Edit: Just realized this is an old thread that I had already responded to :/

I Have A Gen 1 and in my Area we only have 81 and 95 should i fill with half 81 and Half 95?

Depends?

Where are you?

Edit - Ops - didn't look to see this post above was 3 years old. Sorry!

I never heard of 81 so I was thinking he might be in a different part of the world.
