Speaking of façades, I've heard and saw a few incidents which made me wonder about the Russian capability.Remember this war has been going on for 8+ years even though the media would have you think it started 3 years ago. Russia has been under sanctions for most of that time and this sure looks like a superpower in rapid decline. It's possible that Putin's advanced weapons are little more than a parade fleet. Obviously, Putin thought the Ukraine invasion would be a walk in the park, so why not show the world his shinney war machines in action against an enemy just rolling over to the invaders? I am of the opinion Putin is bluffing with the advanced stuff. He probably has a bunch of prototype weapons to look more formidable than he really is. Whatever the case he is still a pretty formidable conventional threat backed up by nuke and chemical ordinance as his panic weapons.
On the other hand, this is not that unusual. We have approximately 100 F-22 Raptors. Assume 80% are battle-ready at any time (assuming the media has it right) and you're not going to see a dominant presence on a major battlefield. Besides, it doesn't make sense to risk a $125 million aircraft when an F-18 will do the job adequately.
That's my opinion as a leading defense analyst, haha!
One was from a navy friend, he said they did a joint operation with the Russians and out maneuvered them pretty easily and when the sailors were ashore at their base, they all looked shabby and acted starved when they went to the DFAC, and they never had any money. They did an exchange and he was aboard the 'Russian ship, he said it was dirty, unorganized and the food sucked...but they kept him pretty isolated and he was restricted in his movements.
Another friend in the air force remembers when the Russian air force was assisting in an airlift and they brought a few Antonovs...he said the planes were filthy and were all low on fluids...he recalls they put a 45 gal drum of hydraulic fluid in one of them...and he echoed the air crew looked starved and had no money.
And I personally recall a team of Russian spec ops guys came over for some joint training and they definitely were not the "Gods of war" we were led to believe, my team out classed them in almost every aspect....and they too acted starved all the time, they just couldn't get enough to eat...I also noted a lot of their equipment looked new-almost like it was a show...I really got suspect when one of them was fumbling with his night vision....a special forces member doesn't fumble with such things-that led me to believe he wasn't familiar with that system.
I talked to a US spec ops team member friend of mine and they found hidden cameras on a team member who was with them....to send them home would have sparked some sort of international incident so they just stripped the cameras from him and searched the others....then decided to "low key" the training op so as to not give too much capability away...
