Barreling down this straight headed downhill, you see the hairpin as the road doubles back on itself, then you see the sign, 10 mph, hard on the binders, set up the line, and break right.
The Leggett Section is an aggressive stretch of road.
Lighthouse wasn't open yet, but I've taken many tour groups to it over the last 20 years. You can climb the spiral staircase inside and it's open to the public to climb up to the top and stand inside the very top.
There are many (short) parallel detours along Highway 1. This is the 'old Highway 1', before the idea of road straightening was invented. This is the original Highway 1 from a few decades back.
original Sea Ranch Barn dates to 1870. The Sea Ranch was originally a 5200-acre 16 square-mile sheep ranch that was developed starting in 1964 as a community along the ocean.
Many of the original homes in this ocean side community are small, some a mere 1000 square feet. Today the original 5200 acre ranch contains 1769 homes, yet only 1305 people actually live here and only 300 are said to reside full time. Sea Ranch is considered 80% built out, and half that acreage is communal. There is no town, no main street, no sidewalks, no streetlights. And fences between the homes are not allowed. Half the homes are Vacation Rentals, so if you’d like to base here instead of riding past, do some homework and base your journey here.
So the new Busa liked the ocean to Leggett ride eh? There are some tough corners in there. I followed a couple Harley baggers (briefly) thru there one time that were throwin sparks left and right from their floorboards. Some of those switchbacks really take a dip. Lots of gouge marks in the pavement around some of them. Oddly, I doubt I’ve stopped between Leggett and the Pacific more than once or twice in all the times I’ve ridden thru there. Nice pics.
What if we could spend the entire day in the Santa Cruz Mountains outside San Francisco and ride nearly every twisty, noteworthy motorcycle road in this low range- in one day. All of them. What would that be like? I bet that would be a super fun day of riding.
Wondering what the route looked like? A few hours later with the mapping program... I had a plan.
Start from Woodside: King Mountain Rd > Highway 35 > Highway 92 > Main Street, Half Moon Bay, Higgins Canyon Rd > Purisma Creek Rd > Highway 1 > Verde Rd > Lobitos Creek Rd > Highway 35 > Sky Londa > Highway 84 > La Honda Rd > San Gregano > Stage Rd > Bean Hollow Rd > Highway 1 > Pigeon Point Lighthouse > Highway 1 > Gazos Creek Rd > Cloverdale Rd > Pescadero Creek > Alpine > Highway 35 > Bear Creek Rd > Highway 9 > Highway 35 > Bear Creek Rd > Highway 9 > Highway 236 > Big Basin SP > Highway 236 > Jamison Creek Rd > Empire Grade > Pine Flat Rd > Smith Grade > Empire Grade > Highway 1
We were intrigued by this bike, first time I've ever seen one in the real, the Ducati XDiavel. The stock rear tire was huge.
