EV vehicles

More than 30 years ago, different country, a friend had a number of BMW cars stolen, one after the next. Then got hijacked with one. That was the final straw.

Took a bottle of Scotch, laced it with arsenic, locked it in the glove box. Car got stolen, they found it a day later with four dead bodies.
That's definitely one way of providing an anti-theft device.....and stopping future thefts....

And yet insurance companies aren't sold on self drive yet......lots of accidents are happening when in self drive mode considering 99% of the other vehicles aren't using self drive.
They aren't shoving self drive down our throats. You don't have to buy it when you buy a car.

You do have to buy the black box that stores telemetry, and ABS and airbags etc.

Lots of cars have this feature though....and these cars are insured and getting into accidents.....

I am not sure you are following me. I never said cars aren't still getting in accidents. The insurance industry would love to never have an accident to pay for.

There are plenty of vehicles that don't have these features that don't get into crashes. And plenty that have these features that do.

I'm probably not tracking what you are saying.....but I'm trying to........

There are a lot (a lot) of auto insurance claims out there these days.....I'm 100% positive insurance companies would be more than happy to not have any claims to cover....

Drivers these days are the worst I've seen in my relatively short lifetime.....there are just so many nannies on vehicles these days that if at any time they fail for whatever reason, drivers are lost without them.....

A couple years ago a neighbor 3 doors down was trying to park his 5th wheel travel trailer.....it was blocking the street and he was out of his truck scratching his head....when I asked him what was going on, he said his trailer assist sensors/cameras all went down and he's never had to back it in without it before and is worried he will hit something.....so I asked him if I could back it in for him........so I did......

Even my wife's Edge has a complete package of nannies and is kind of a pain in the rear at times.....she likes a few of them on and anytime I drive it I forget and it lets me know in a hurry......I hate them things.....

Let's use your last paragraph to see if we can illuminate.

It has a complete package of nannies and is a pain in the rear at times.

More and more "nannies" are being forced on us. Right now for example we have the "Option" of purchasing lane change assistant, lane departure warning, or drowsy alerts. For say $2000 added purchase price. I'm totally fine not purchasing them.

That won't be an option forever. It will become standard features. And you won't have the option of spending $2000 less. You will just be spending $2000 more to own them whether they are a pain the rear or not.

Gotcha and agree.....

Just like all the nannies of the past, seat belts, abs, traction control, airbags, etc.....they are all standard features just like all the other nannies will soon be. Then at some point they won't be able to be shut off....

And not only will they all have those features, you will have to use them. Things like pesky seatbelts and anti lock brakes. The horror. Are you one of those people that doesn't wear seatbelts and thinks that they should be optional on vehicles?

Yep. You won't be able to pick a vehicle that doesn't factor in the cost of all of these.

And they are more and more complex features. All passed along to us like it or not.

I am totally against a black box data recorder being mandatory in my vehicle.

It's just a matter of time when the data will be used outside of an accident taking place.

Hey we downloaded your data and saw that 6 months ago the accelerometer data showed an aggressive lane change took place. Your premiums therefore will now be higher.

My neighbor had a box installed for his insurance company that automatically downloaded his driving and if he met a certain criteria, he received a discount....

His battery kept dying and he had a hard time tracing shy and then found it was this box that was constantly downloading info.....

He took that out really quickly after.

.....at what point do you stop being confrontational and nasty and start either discussing topics or knowing who you are discussing them with?

For the record, I use seatbelts.....and I know how to drive so I don't need blind spot monitors, adaptive cruise, lane centering, back up cameras and the like......

I also ride a motorcycle with zero nannies and don't apologize for that........at all........

Yes they always want to dangle the "This will be good for you" approach.

I have a friend who fell for the GEICO plug in dongle. He drove a 1.6 liter Miata. You pretty much had to use most of the throttle to keep her in the power band.

It records throttle position data.

He got his rates raised instead of lowered. Because he was deemed an aggressive driver.

You said that you don't need all of those nanny things. Seat belts are a nanny thing. And I like having them in case someone else is busy texting and hits me. Same goes for lots of other "nanny things".

At what point do you stop being so sensitive and start acting like a man? Maybe you think that you are the worlds greatest driver (you aren't), but others are better for having safety things. And that helps all of us.

I, probably like yourself learned to drive without any nannies and in my opinion we are far better drivers because of this. I've had the advantage of taking a few tactical driving courses that have helped as well.

ABS and seatbelts I can see because they have been proven to save lives along with safety glass, radial tires and disc brakes....the list could go on and on between what is an innovation and what has become an intrusion.

People no longer even do shoulder checks or look behind using mirrors anymore......and get into accidents or hit something as a result because these nannies can't catch everything....

Even the adaptive cruise module gets covered in ice and snow, shuts down and the driver who has grown dependent on it rear ends another car....

Nannies have their place....driver have to know how to drive.

You sound like my late grandfather. He was a good man, but slow to adapt.

Available here in the US for a long time.
No box, app on your phone.

This was over 10 yrs ago...no app then.....

I still can't see it being better now as far as being under a driving microscope.

I do know tech has come a long way....my wife can go into a secure app on her phone for her car where she can do a lot of things including putting it in different driver modes if she wanted to (in the case of a new driver). She can even allow the service dept access so they can diagnose any issues without bringing it in.....

The downside is it does a daily update that causes the center screen to go blank for a short period of time, normally it does this when the vehicle is shut off but there are some updates that are sporadic-so we were told.....

I believe Red uses the app.
