MotoGP 2023

”Unfit” they said. I agree completely.

I’m liking Bezzecchi this season. His next year’s salary should really get a hike. I also believe that Fabio is a top rider and if Yamaha finally makes a competitive bike or, if he leaves Yamaha, he’ll return as a true competitor.

I think at this point the best thing for all involved (including the sport) is for Marquez to move on from HONDA. Remember, the Honda was built by/for Marquez and many of the problems stem directly or indirectly from the lack of stability originally built into the bike from day one. Honda has historically not let its riders get bigger than Honda, even Rossi was told he is just a rider. Marquez has been able to own Honda and their MotoGP efforts.

The problem for Honda is Mir and Rins are not feeding them information to build a new bike for full-sized riders (unlike MM & Pedrosa). So this may delay the development of a whole new bike for at least a year.

The problem for MM is a bit more troublesome. He is paid too much for where he is in his career, and with all of the injuries and learning a new bike I'm not sure he will be able to step off the Honda and back into winning ways (remember the Honda was built specifically for him). TO leave next year MM would have to buy his way out of the contract or get someone else to do it. Redbull might do it, as MM is a huge marketing billboard. But I don't see a factory that MM would want to go to paying all that money, given the quality of the riders out there (including Mir & Rins).

Then there is the question of whether or not MM is still that good. The sport jumped a long way in the 2 years MM was dealing with injuries. MM can certainly stay with them but winning a championship requires being able to stay in front riding at maybe 80% or so. Riding at the limit means you'll crash, and that's what is happening at Honda right now. Admittedly the Honda is a historically bad bike, but MM is way overriding it too. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if MM decided to leave Honda over the summer break, and that would mean cutting him out of the development of the bike for the rest of the year.

Finally, MM is in this for his legacy. He has put everything on the line to beat Rossi. What factory wants to sign on for that? The goal of a factory is to build a better bike each year (for example, Ducati). MM's win-at-all-cost attitude just isn't consistent with being a good teammate or factory rider. This is all very interesting to me. Few sports have the dynamic of the rider-bike synergy driving success.

Of course this is my outside looking in perspective, so it's probably completely wrong! Haha

Mat Oxley interviews Jonas Folger and gets his informative views about how much GP machines had evolved
when was with Yamaha back in '17 to climbing on board the KTM last year and filling in for Pol.
One of many points of interest to me was his brief thoughts on what he thinks Toprak discovered when Yamaha let him
hoon around on the GP M1 a few weeks back

Wonder what King Kenny would think of the new GP bikes.

I remember an interview once not too long ago where he said something about the challenges of riding the GP bikes in his day compared to riding them today with all the "gadgets" helping the riders...

He said the idiosyncrasies of the older bikes kept the riders honest and on their game because if you let up even a little you would either crash or not be competitive or both and they were very unforgiving.

It was a small blurb within another interview and it's hard to find and post now because I can't remember which interview it was in...

Not sure if it has been discussed already but sounds like Yamaha and Honda may get some concessions coming soon despite both having a podium each this season. Before the whining starts, Ducati's current dominance in both MotoGP and WSBK and WSBK decades ago came from consessions as well.

He's not a current rider, but Rossi won world championships on the 500cc 2-stroke, 800, 900, & 1000 cc bikes from 2 different manufacturers. He built the M1 into a bike other riders won championships on and he trained several champions to be, including Pecco who is the current champ. He also knew when his time was up and slowed down, stepped down off the factory team, and then retired gracefully. Amazing legacy. And yes, this was a swipe at MM, haha!
