MYTHOS went down hard

I’m coming up over a rise doing about 70 mph and up ahead I see a deer. Will she cross? Hell yeah, she crossed. I heard the sound of a loud thump and that’s all I remember. I woke up laying in the road near rye bike. One of my 8th grade students came to me. His father was there too. I got up feeling the scrapes on my knees and hands. I didn’t crap myself. The ZX-14 lay in the ditch, opposite side of the road I was traveling on and the bike was facing the opposite direction I was traveling. There was broken plastic all down the road and I saw right away the crankshaft cover was scraped clean through. An ambulance came very soon. I refused treatment. No broken bones. The cops arrived and they figure me and the bike slid abut 70 feet. The deer was found dead in the woods a short distance away. I’m in no shape to butcher a deer or I’d have taken it. It will be left for the forest scavengers, I’m sure.

Have fingertip skin gone on both hands, had light duty gloves. a couple bad gouges on my right knuckles. Both knees scraped the size of oranges. I had jeans on. No serious upper body or head injuries. I had a textile jacket now ripped up and a helmet. My ribs are quite sore below my pecs. I probably hit the handlebars. Right hand knuckles are swollen and juice is still coming out. I was very thirsty after the crash and still am but have not drank too much water. I don’t think I have a concussion. I’m feeling fatigued and for, mostly on the abrasions.

I guess I can’t show pics of me because it says “no gore.”

I will show pics of the bike. The tow guy brought it to my storage unit. Lots of aftermarket goodies I’ll salvage. will sell cheap if anyone is interested. I can’t find my title to the bike so I couldn’t hand it over to the tow guy.

I’m going to try to take a shower. and go to sleep soon.

still got the busa. will show pics of the 14 ASAP. my poor baby.
DAMN....!!! wishing you a very speedy recovery.take care.

He obviously wasn't a caring health professional. Probably afraid of his own shadow too.

He could've stopped his vehicle, backed it up, turned on his hazards, and waited for emergency services to arrive.
Now that the story comes together more, I believe that is what he did. An adult was present with his son and another boy. The adult called for the ambulance. The boy accompanying the father and son knew me and said my name which woke me up. They left as soon as the ambulance arrived. I believe the adult probably was the doctor. The cop who arrived on the scene said the call was "just for a guy laying in the road." Sounds like someone might have reported as much as they needed to without giving out information that might have caused him trouble. It never occurred to me that the adult present when I woke up might have been the doctor. I may never know.

well then I stand corrected. These days people can react in a myriad of different ways. But to leave a human being injured on the road whether it was his fault or not his fault at all, just seems insensitive. Your information changes my position entirely.

I've met indignant professionals in a wide array of life. Some are indignant because they are asshats. Some are indignant because they have 75 plates spinning at once. I might be 76.

Some don't want to talk about work. Some are my counterparts professionally and I might have edged them out in a professional exchange.

All of them except the azzhats are good people. They just often stay amongst their peers because the rest don't understand their life.

Day 12: Wounds are looking nice and clean. The smaller ones have reduced in size. The larger ones have not reduced in size much. I'm up and around a lot more. The wounds are less painful but I think they might be starting to itch a bit around the edges. I see white tissue showing through a pinkish film on the middle of the right thumb knuckle wound. I think that spot wore almost through to the tendon.

Itching is good but don't succumb to it. Moisten it and it will go away. That's new skin fighting with the scab trying to grow into the edge of the wound inward. Progress in that itch.

Cant beat red white and black my favorite color combo in motorcycle attire
Black and white for me. Wish I was as slim now as I was then because Ida had these on. and there's my poor 14, probably about 12,000 miles and not a scratch. She came a long way from that with Carrazzzeria rims and Ohlins suspensions. Lots of cool crap on that bike. It kills me to not have that bike back.

Definitely a cool bike....such a shame....

Yep, if you had that gear on, you'd not got a scratch.

You're probably right Bumblebee. This experience has got me to thinking about fate though. Changing one little thing could have drastic consequences sort of like it does in stories about time travel. Those changes wouldn't necessarily need to start a chain of events that take thousands of years to alter history. History could have been altered within seconds for better or worse had a had my leathers on. ...unless there is a plan for history that can't be altered no matter what choices we make.

BUT if I knew in advance I was going to have that crash, you can bet I would have opted for the leathers.

To see into the future would be a handy thing..

I guess I am lucky in a way, being in the military trained me to anticipate things on another level and to prepare for the worse hoping for the best...

I shared your story with a good friend of mine who rides in a tee shirt and jeans....he dropped by the other day in full gear and has vowed to continue to wear it on his bike..

So, your misery has inspired others to take precautions as best we can....even full gear won't help if you make contact with a tree or something but at least it's a start point.

There's a bigger picture than just me and my injuries. There ya go, history was altered, your buddy is wearing full gear now! If there's a crash in his future, he'll be safer.

As soon as I got replying to your post, the big red, white and blue delivery truck came and gave me my new gloves...now I'm going to break them in as they are a little stiff...

My new gloves are great, I wore them cutting the grass to help break them in a bit...I got some funny looks from my neighbors...I have a big yellow lawn tractor and they all thought I was making a fashion statement....

A week or so ago, I came home on the bike in full gear as usual...I went into the garage on the bike and came out on my Cub Cadet in full gear....a couple neighbors were out and they had a good laugh at that...

Day 15: I really notice skin growing around the knee wounds but it's purple skin! Hopefully that will change to my normal color. The knee wounds, what's left of them, are almost entirely covered in a very thin transparent scab and the gauze doesn't stick much anymore when I change the dressings. I still grease them up with Neosporin and cover with gauze. The hands are mostly healed, just very small scabs. The thumb wound went deep on the knuckle but even that is coming along. The calf wound is still quite large. That was not especially deep but probably the largest in terms of area.

I went for a 5 mile walk today.

For anyone who goes through this, be careful what tape you use to hold dressings down. I used a cloth tape and it actually removed skin when I took it off. It doesn't stick well enough to stay in place so I was wrapping all the way around my leg. The white paper tape also needs to wrap around the whole leg but I still prefer it to a tape that rips off skin. I'm trying the clear medical tape now and it sticks really hard. No need to wrap around the whole leg so I'm anticipating no skin tears when i take it off.

Purple is good. It's the red blood cells bringing in oxygen. It will recede.

Not to gross anyone out but if anyone finds themself in this situation, here's what to expect. The first pic shows my knee 7 days after the crash. I was doing my best to allow scabs to form but with application of a petroleum jelly based ointment and the drainage that was still going on, the scabs dissolved and hardened up again, then dissolved a second time. The whitish membrane of skin was all that was left after a shower. I decided at that point a moist healing was the only way to go. The large hard scabs were pretty painful and they kept cracking. I was in to urgent care for a cleaning and debriding the next day and the staff said everything was healing with no infection. It was Neopsporin and gauze after that. I even started that routine with the thumb a few days ago and it's closing up. I have a small wound on the bump of my ankle bone and that has not been closing so I went with ointment and gauze on that too. I suppose my shoe rubs that area and prevents it from healing.

Here's how the knees look at day 19, After doing a moist healing, they are entirely covered in smooth, pink skin. I have started going without the gauze unless I'm outside. Someone told me they will scar if exposed to the sun too soon. The knee to the left has a tiny blood blister that looks to have drained a bit. I think that was caused by me kneeling to start my little BBQ grill yesterday. It's skin but not tough enough for heavy duty work yet.

The side shin wound is almost skinned over. That side calf wound to the right in the picture is large and taking more time but it's coming along.

I'm wrapping those pink knees and going on my walk! :) sure could use a set of flip-flops for that ankle wound but I'd rather not hazard a foot injury right now out on the trail.
