MYTHOS went down hard

Day 8: Early. I talked to my RN friend about the calf scabs. Both are quite red around the edges, the left is still dripping and I can see wet, flesh colored areas in the center. It looks pretty gross and I have some concerns infection is developing. The discolored areas do feel warmer to the touch than the nearby undamaged skin but all of the wounds, even those mostly healed feel warm. The calf wounds are not painful. The knees are a bit painful of course because of the flexion of skin. The nurse said discoloration around the wounds is normal maceration--red blood cells being attracted to the wound--it's healing. She also said it's normal that the wounds are still draining. She'll have a look in a couple days. I'm not planning to wash the wounds for a while, not until I see a good dark, thick scab on all. Back to bed, heels on chair, calves held aloft so as to not contact anything.

I never wash my wounds after the initial scrub. Soo many complications come with water touching healing flesh. I give it a few days to a week at least before I even try. Especially if you are on city water with chlorine and chloramines disinfectants in the water . They just kill and aggravate the newly exposed tissue, especially around the wounds edge.

Welp, water's the least of my worries now. I used up all the Lidocain ointment I had so I switched to Neosporin. The Neosporin seems to have reduced my hard won scabs to a jelly! I guess I put way too much on. It feels a lot better than a thick, hard scab but it's not sealing the wound from bacteria. Oh well, back to the start. Hopefully the scabs will harden up again if they don't just drip away. Damn.

The wounds have to scab over to create new skin.
That was my assumption and that's why I'm disappointed that I may have ruined the scabs. It may not be a total loss, I've been standing here at the computer the last few hours and I have some sort of scabs left. I think they will firm up after all the Neosporin soaks in. The directions say "use a small amount" and apparently that's why. I was gloping on the stuff the nurse gave me and it soaked in and disappeared. AneCream, it was called.

Regarding the need for a wound to scab over before it heals, I don't believe a scab is actually necessary for tissue to regenerate. Sometimes deep wounds are packed so they heal from the inside out in order to not trap an infection. I don't want to try anything fancy like that for my skin wounds. I've had a scab on every other skin wound in my life and it healed so I'm not about to experiment with the most severe skin wounds I've ever had and risk an infection. I'm sure there's bacteria virtually everywhere and that I assume, is why our bodies make scabs over a wound.

This is till day 8 but my sleeping is happening when I feel like it. The melted scabs have seemed to firm up again and they are painful more like they were before they went soft. I believe part of the scab did drip away with the fluid that runs from the wound though. "Use Neosporin very sparingly if you use it" is my recommendation. I would only put it on a thick scab and even then, a light film.

"Does a wound need a scab to heal?" Someone could just google it.

No.
I guess if I were under the care of a doctor, I'd try it. My RN friend will visit in a couple days.

NS is keeping the bacteria at bay. You do not need a scab to heal. But if you do scab and tear it open, it's a new injury. Which breaks the little tentacles of healing the body builds. And do it has to restart that in the break.

You are on the mend. But you did get your ass kicked so welcome to getting older. :-)

Good thread to reinforce wearing proper riding gear....

Would have been an entirely different outcome.
Yes, I'd have a huge bruise on my right thigh and an egg sized bruise on the right side of my belly and that'd be it. Just noticed the bruise this morning. Funny how some bruises show up a week later.

I sure have felt like an old man hobbling around the way I do. I guess I'm glad I was out for the entire ass kicking but as Bumblebee said, I would have much preferred taking it with leathers on.

Partly because of this thread, I did a little "kit check" of my gear and ordered a new set of gloves with more armor...

I wear ballistic nylon gear (pants/jacket) with Kelvar and Cordura inserts and hard armor with Joe Rocket high top boots and an HJC RPHA helmet...I think I should be ok for any slides....

I have contemplated going back to a leather suit but will probably stay with the ballistics...

I’m about to order another pair of pants not sure which yet though

All ya missing is a airbag system. @Mythos Might want to consider get a airbag yourself. The new ones from Alpinestar have come down in price. No need to match jacket and airbag. Tech air 5 system.

Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 System - RevZilla

All scabs dissolved. Any oil based ointment will soften scabs or so it seems. Since the scabs were soft, I wrapped my legs in Glad wrap and went to Walmart for dressings. No scabs, should have a dressing. Came home and showered and there is a whitish membrane left on the wounds, some membrane has fallen mostly off. I'm assuming dead skin so I sent pics to my nurse friend. She said to make an appointment, the wounds need to be cleaned and debrided. First thing in the morn. Sounds like it will be a lot of fun. It will cost me too. Oh well, I'm alive.
