(BigmanZ @ May 14 2007,23:51) Technically satanist, so that would put me in the Athiest bracket.
Just a question... not looking for a debate or to tick others off... But how can you be technically a satanist? Isn't a satanist someone who would worship satan? Again, not being a smart alec, just don't read up on many religions... Actually, I don't read much anyway, but thats beside the point

No, that wouldn't put you in the Athiest bracket at all. In order to be a satanist you first have to believe in God as well.

It would definitely toss you into the "Other" category though.

Actually, no. Satanism has nothing to do with Satan, or any diety for that matter. It is the belief that you do not follow anything that has not been proven as real. Hence it flies in the face of just about every religion out there as a true satanist will err on the side of science instead of religion. It is why Christianity labeled Lucifer as 'Satan', an attempt to alienate worshippers from the Satanist lifestyle which questions any worship of a diety (Same applies to the Wiccan faith actually, Christianity's picture of what Satan looks like happens to also parrallel that of the Forest Spirit that Wiccans worship). The place where I difer is in Satanism you treat others as they treat you, and if somebody crosses you then you go out of your way to destroy them. I personally like giving people a second chance.

The people who claim to be Satanist and worship Satan or nothing more then kids looking for attention by flying in the face of their religious parents. It is the same with those who claim to be Wiccan and then try to put a curse on you or hex you....if either knew anything about what they claimed they'd realize that Satanists don't believe in God or for that matter the Devil and that Wiccans do not curse others as the deeds you do in life will come around to haunt you two fold further down the road.

Once again, you should study what Satanism truelly is as it has been around long before Christianity.

I agree that satanism has been around a lot longer than Christianity as it holds to the Church.

As for me giving it a great deal of study; I've been there and done that. Obviously on a different level and playing field than yourself though.

After reading your former post I would say you belong in the Athiest category. Believing in nothing is Athiestic.

I take it your studies were on the Church of Satan...in that regard, then yes you are correct but sadly Satanism has nothing to do with those who wish to worship the devil. They should of done their homework before they labeled themselves as such. *shrugs* Though I guess Devilites doesn't sound as good as Satanism...course it's not a religion so then yeah, I'd be athiest. It is more a way of life I would guess.

See? Now this is interesting!
When exactly was the birth of Satanism? I mean, can you date it's earliest existence in an organized form or has it just evolved from a collection of similar beliefs?

I'll see if I can look it up. As far as I know there is no exact date as to when the term was first used but there is scripts that reference people as satanists, a term that was used to describe people who did not worship. I think it was during roman times that the reference was made, I'll check and see what I can dig up.

Edit: As for the lifestyle of 'Doing unto others as they do unto you'. I think you are probably pretty close with thinking it as an evolution of similar beliefs. Possibly a backlash at those that persicuted them as being devil worshippers which would make sense as the idea seems rather foreign..."We don't believe in religion, only proven philosophies....oh ya, we'll also kill you if you cross us." Just doesn't seem to make sense. Oh and I apologize for spelling errors. English Major I am not.

I would think that people of "no belief" started to identify with others of like mind in the era of the Roman Empire, but it's not when the philosophy started or flourished. There were people well before that time that professed a "non-belief" (rather, living without giving thought to more complex things), but just didn't call it anything. More of, "When I'm finished being chased by this beast and finding some food before I have to eat my second cousin over there, and figuring out why that stupid bear won't share his cave tonight, I'll think about what I don't think about".

Could be after centuries of Greek and Roman philosophical thought (ie: conquering and pillaging) anything opposite what they were believing in sounded pretty good. Ancient thumbing-of-nose to authority. I'm sure as the Empire crumbled it gave fuel to the belief that "we were right, they were wrong".

But wouldn't the technological and scientific superiority of the Greeks and Romans fit more in the Satanic worldview (minus the Apollo/Zeus stuff). Did they start to freak during the Dark Ages when technology went AWOL for a while? And Jewish traditions and records teach of Lucifer (Satan, Baal, Beelzebub (sp), The Morning Star, blah, blah, etc.) which predates the organized belief of non-belief, so I totally agree with you that it predates Christianity.

what about beleing in the Earth and spirits, Native American Religon, if you can really label it as a religon??

OR, you could just add "UTTERLY CYNICAL" and I'd check that one...

Funny, all I really got from the Ugly Betty thread was a lot of gay bashing...go figure...

Actually, it wasn't YOU that I was talking about LOL I know things got funny and jovial, but there were some pretty hateful things said about gays...totally NOT okay in my book, especially from those hiding behind their Bibles and God, but I digress...

THIS is a religious thread...hypocrisy aside

To be fair we should have a I HATE: America's Next Top Model and Every Freakin' Soap Opera Ever Created.

To me, a narcissistic, narrow-minded, waste of good video and a irritating glorification of materialism, infidelity, envy, bitterness, and perpetual bad acting. A pox unto all of them.

There's a very fine line between voicing a personal opinion about an issue and bashing the individual that holds the opinion. One of my ex-bosses was pretty much evil-incarnate. Not enough wings on flies for him to pull off. Didn't like his views and beliefs on just about anything human. We'd get into some really good verbal scraps but neither one of us went to a personal level. It was really the only way to hear each other and I KNEW where he stood on an issue without the rhetoric getting in the way. (Sort of why I dreading this next election - gonna get ugly.)

EVERYBODY has an agenda, but few have a point. When folks start pushing the agendas others push back and nobody makes a point. Then the bashing begins.

BTW: Some of my best friends are Utterly Cynical Christians (myself included)

Now things like Gay bashing is why I stayed out of that thread. I could tell where it was going before I got off Jinksters main post. I'll be honest, I don't agree with the gay lifestyle. I try and live as Christian as I can, and I know sometimes it doesn't show (I'm remembering the thursday night fun I had with 'Chelle and her friend... a BUNCH of joking around). But that don't mean I don't like Gay people. Just because it's a lifestyle, don't mean the people themselves are horrible... Shoot, 1 of my best friends in High School was a full on, self proclaimed Dyke. I know what my religion says about being gay though, so I am against that particular lifestyle. No, I don't protest or anything, I keep it to myself. Shoot, a good friend of mine is a Wiccan High Priest... We both get along GREAT, we just stay away from talking religion because it sometimes has a tendancy to escalate. Anywho, I have no Idea where my minds going with this, just hoping this one doesn't get out of control...
