I wanted to ride a road we call 'The Racetrack'. Your map calls it Cecilville Rd.
The Racetrack- Beyond the '2', this road is a single lane paved mountain road
Ever get to NorCal to ride it, you'll quickly see why we call it that. It has ZERO traffic as it's technically a dead end unless you like single lane mountain roads. Bikers do, but traffic - almost none.
So far out in the wilderness, gas stops have to be carefully pre-planned.
Sprawling metropolis of Cecilville, population 15- one building.
That's it.
But they have an above ground tank. With handwritten notes for those that are not local.
...Or go somewhere else! Love that.
This is what's considered a Congested Area, population 15
This tiny mountain community didn't even have electricity until the mid-1980s, and still had the last hand crank operated telephones in the United States into the mid-1980s.
Yes, that's a front yard. And no, there's no fences anywhere.
Grew up around horses. We had an appaloosa named Bailey and a Morgan named Finn. My little sister started competing in 4-H in middle school and eventually started competing in equestrian events on the national level. Expensive hobby, though.
But by the time both my sisters were regularly competing in horse events, I was almost out of high school and more into girls and British sports cars.
The Forks of Salmon is a single-lane wide mountain road - we like to call it the Bolivian Death Road, as it's the closest thing we've got to the Bolivian counterpart. But its single lane paved and 100 ft drop-offs at times. Awesome sauce! The southern leg of the fork is Cecilville Rd, and the northern leg is Sawyers Bar Rd and runs through one of the most remote mountain regions in the state known as the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
Two flats in two days, that's a new record. Although, a year ago we had two nails in a tire at the same time and I plugged double punctures in the same tire.
This time around, they again couldn't get the mushroom to seat due to this being more of a cut, and we had to go to a worm. Again, it was a cut rather than a puncture. Extremely rare, but twice in two days is a new record.
You also might notice both these tires, this one and yesterday, don't have much tread left. So, that's on the rider showing up for a 1000-mile ride on the last 30% of the tire life.
Gotta be super careful on these roads, when you least expect it is when a truck is coming right at you.
I got hit head-on by an 18-yr-old kid with no license and no insurance in a pickup back in 2015 on a hairpin much like this. My knee went through the headlight and I went over the hood of the truck. Bumper went into my shin.
What a head on with a pickup vs motorcycle looks like
And... What a blind turn looks like on a single-lane mountain road. Don't want to do the above again.
See that drop off?
Still got the image of the semi in your head, right?
