2021 Pashnit Touring on a Hayabusa

Not all the locals were on horses.

I wanted to ride a road we call 'The Racetrack'. Your map calls it Cecilville Rd.

The Racetrack- Beyond the '2', this road is a single lane paved mountain road
CecilvilleRd-map.JPG

Ever get to NorCal to ride it, you'll quickly see why we call it that. It has ZERO traffic as it's technically a dead end unless you like single lane mountain roads. Bikers do, but traffic - almost none.

30 miles of non-stop twisties on perfect pavement

So far out in the wilderness, gas stops have to be carefully pre-planned.

Sprawling metropolis of Cecilville, population 15- one building.

That's it.

But they have an above ground tank. With handwritten notes for those that are not local.

...Or go somewhere else! Love that.

This is what's considered a Congested Area, population 15

This tiny mountain community didn't even have electricity until the mid-1980s, and still had the last hand crank operated telephones in the United States into the mid-1980s.

The Cecilville Farmers Line dated to the 1890s.

We finally figured out what the congestion is all about when the the locals wandered over to check out the commotion

Yes, that's a front yard. And no, there's no fences anywhere.

Grew up around horses. We had an appaloosa named Bailey and a Morgan named Finn. My little sister started competing in 4-H in middle school and eventually started competing in equestrian events on the national level. Expensive hobby, though.

But by the time both my sisters were regularly competing in horse events, I was almost out of high school and more into girls and British sports cars.

But at 13, I wanted to be a cowboy.

These guys are also famous for hanging out in the middle of the road. They're also not skittish like cattle.

More so all you get from these horses is, "I'm standing here!" :p

The Forks of Salmon is a single-lane wide mountain road - we like to call it the Bolivian Death Road, as it's the closest thing we've got to the Bolivian counterpart. But its single lane paved and 100 ft drop-offs at times. Awesome sauce! The southern leg of the fork is Cecilville Rd, and the northern leg is Sawyers Bar Rd and runs through one of the most remote mountain regions in the state known as the Trinity Alps Wilderness.

Few miles later I snapped a backwards pic, glanced at the screen and only saw just Phil's Aprilia RS660 in the photo. Well nuts. That's never good.

Why we call it the Bolivian Death Rd. Single lane and a long way down. Zero shoulders.

Nobody shows up, guys are looking worried.

Two flats in two days, that's a new record. Although, a year ago we had two nails in a tire at the same time and I plugged double punctures in the same tire.

This time around, they again couldn't get the mushroom to seat due to this being more of a cut, and we had to go to a worm. Again, it was a cut rather than a puncture. Extremely rare, but twice in two days is a new record.

You also might notice both these tires, this one and yesterday, don't have much tread left. So, that's on the rider showing up for a 1000-mile ride on the last 30% of the tire life.

When it's all supervisors: Xavier, Jeff, Mark & Bruce are all equally in charge of repairs

Finally, got it to hold air with the worm and back on the road.

Reshooting my photo - what it should have looked like.

Look at this road... Remember this image in your mind's eye for a moment. Got it?

Now imagine driving an 18-wheeler up this single-lane pulling a 40-ft semi-trailer.

Get to that in a minute. ;)

Still got the image, right?

Gotta be super careful on these roads, when you least expect it is when a truck is coming right at you.

I got hit head-on by an 18-yr-old kid with no license and no insurance in a pickup back in 2015 on a hairpin much like this. My knee went through the headlight and I went over the hood of the truck. Bumper went into my shin.

What a head on with a pickup vs motorcycle looks like

And... What a blind turn looks like on a single-lane mountain road. Don't want to do the above again.

See that drop off?

Still got the image of the semi in your head, right?
