No real problems yet. She popped out of second 2 times this year once under hard thottle and once right after an easy shift. I worry about it sometimes though I guess that is a Busa owners biggest fear.

I hear a lot of bad things about the 05, and 06 busa tranny. Does this famous second gear issue seem to be isolated to only a few different years? What about 03?? mine's an 03 and am getting ideas about selling it for fear of having to yank the motor out and tear the bottom end apart.

One problem I seem to have with my 03 tranny is getting stuck in 5th gear. If I wait until I am close to being stopped before downshifting, sometimes it gives me fits getting out of 4th or 5th gear. Never had this issue with any other bike. Normal? or omen of worse problems to come?

My 02 had it at 52,000 miles and was fixxed for free under warranty.

Your issue sounds a bit different than the 2nd gear problem. I'd guess a fork, shaft, or shift drum. (or all three).

Professor,
There is/was a guy by the name of Rick Tedrose in Lawrence KS,Tedrose Machine Shop. I lost contact with him in the mid-90's,so I'm not sure if he's still going, but may be worth checking on. He was a master of the metals. All my GS1100 & 1150 tranny stuff went though him back in the day as well as a few GSXR's with amazing results at a great price.

And now back to the thread;

Never had a problem with the tranmission but it does shift better after an oil change!

Well heres an interesting tidbit. I have been pretty faithful to the dealership that I bought my bike from. And in return, they have been VERY supportive. I documented this problem on Nov. 9th- that being a year to the day I bought the bike--
BUT what I learned today was that most of this kind of issue is pretty much up to the dealership, with the warranty picking up the tab. I know many here really can't stand working with "stealerships" but my experience has been 100% the other way.
One of the mechanics there really knows his sheet.;(hes an 1100+1150 old school 1/4mi.racer. I have made friends with most of the guys(and girls) at this particular dealership.
My second gear issue WILL be taken care of by these stand-up people; under warranty-- PLUS- the mechanic will check for mismatch of crank parts, while he has it torn down.(you know--the infamous "knock")All it will cost me is for a machining company to back cut the gears(all of them).
SO when it comes time for more mods, that I don't want to do? Guess where I'll be going?

My 04 does that too. But I've owned many bikes over the years and I almost always gear down as I'm coming to a stop....and the few times I'v waited to gear down till I was completely stopped on other bikes, I've had some of the same probs with fighting downshifts. I think its a bike thing in general more than a busa thing

With all the bikes I've had I've never lost a second gear (fingers crossed

) . But I never shift without the clutch...never dragrace....and cruise about as much as I hot rod. Plus I always try and make a nice clean shift, especially from first to second. I don't jam or force the shift, I just snap it. A clean quick shift with a quick clutch pull, and a quick off/on with the throttle. I never hear any grinding ect of any kind....where as when I was younger I was a lazier, slower shifter, I took more time between first and second, and spent a bit more time with the clutch pulled. And I always use to grind it into second. Just keep a good clean shift and I bet your tranny lasts forever

The only thing I have noticed so far w/my '08 is after I down shift, stop and am in neutral. I have had times when it wouldn't go into 1st gear. Over and over I would have to up shift to 2nd from neutral cause it won't go into 1st from neutral.

Merry Christmas!

I have had that problem with my bike before I reworked my tranny. I sometimes had to either move the bike back and forward or move the clutch lever in and out to get it to drop in place.

mine just started popping out of second gear recently. It feels like the chain skips a tooth but i know its not the chain this time because the chain is new and is loobed and adjusted properly. I have an 06 with 19k miles on it. and DD it during the week and race on the weekends. I think my warrenty will be up in january so I think im gonna take the bike to the dealership soon to have the issue checked out. anyone have experience with Deland Motorsports in Deland, Florida?

I have an '06 with 26K on it, and 90% of the time I'm hard on mine from 1st to 2nd, however I do use the clutch.

I have had 2 Busa'S a 2006 & 2007 , Of course I have low miles due to working to much but I have had no problems yet.

I got mine wrecked w/7400 mi. on it and could not ride it before I fixed it. The trans was no good (2nd. gear). When I took it apart it was a mess. It looked like it was doin it for a long time and they never cared to fix it.Probb. why they let the ins. co. salvage it any way with little crash damage. All stock parts and no probbs. 10k since repair.
