Taking a break at Lake Alpine, a reservoir started in 1917. When they started building this dam, it was the tail end of WWI and there were no workers. They were off fighting the war. When WWI ended in 1918, the soldiers came home and they were able to finish this dam.
The town was named for Lord Charles Snowden Fairfax. In 1861, Fairfax was the site of the last political duel in California. Daniel Showalter and Charles W. Piercy, both former assemblymen in the state legislature, decided to settle a political dispute at the home of Lord Fairfax, a mutual friend. Although Fairfax provided lunch to both men and tried to talk them out of it, they eventually headed to an open field nearby and dueled, with Showalter killing Piercy.
No duels today, just lots of motorcycles.
on through the redwood forest out to the ocean
Reaching Tomales Bay and the many Oyster sellers along Highway 1 - about as fresh as it gets
twisty fast s-curves on Highway 1 along Tomales Bay
Love this photo.
I like this photo cuz it shows proper lines.
We're constantly harping on the riders to ride a Delayed-Late-Apex technique, we also call it Outside-In Technique.
The third KTM bike is at the apex on the outside of the turn, Ken on the KTM 890 (#2 bike) is in the middle transitioning across the lane and setting up for entering the next s-curve and then transitions from the outside line to the inside line - Dmitry on the GSA (#1 bike) is now set up to enter the next s-curve. All three bikes are entering the turn on the outside line.
Harping on cornering techniques.
Mandatory stop in Tomales at this little cafe, all bikers along Highway 1 stop here.
We may have doubled the size of the town, bikes everywhere with our tour group.
This is the best part of the California Coastline. Well, that's subjective. Or at least one of my favorite stretches of road anywhere along the ocean. The Sonoma-Mendocino Coastline is any motorcyclist joy ride in it's purest form. Get in front of the tourist traffic and just go hard. Delightful.
Marine layer fog is burning off mid-morning and we can see clear blue skies ahead.
Giant beaks with this huge throat pouch as their primary food source is fish they scoop up in the huge beaks and drain out the water.
Wing spans can be 10 feet. Even from far away, the wingspans are huge.
I just see a train of headlights behind me. Group of this size gets spread out, headlights for a mile or two.
No rush to be anywhere, if you want to chill in the back, that's cool. If you want to pass me and rail, that's okay too.
Can't get lost, there's only one road.
Many tiny coastal towns, this is Manchester, known for it's meticulously groomed (one) tree.
There might be a fire station, a general store, and a couple houses & that's it. On to the next town.
