45 Days on a Gen3 Hayabusa - 2023 Pashnit Touring

Only problem with building your house along a mountain creek. Flooding.

Still.. the sound would sell me instantly

That mountain rain over there looks like serious business. I want to be headed the opposite direction.

This is Lower Rock Creek Rd - it parallels the main highway, aka Old Sherwin Grade.

Any road name with 'old' in the title, you want to take that road.

Curves on Old Sherwin Grade - see the sand on the inside line? We talk about that all the time, always take the outside line on curves like these. Can't see it till you're right on top of it.

There's 10 of these s-curves in succession, left, right left, fun stuff climbing up to the summit.

I could have sat here and watched the rain curtains for awhile.

Might put this one over the mantle. :D

Right near the 6000 ft summit, I stopped again

Wondering what's on the other side of this hill.

DSC02162.JPG

Not one car, not one person passed by, why getting an early start is a favorite pastime, always have the road all to myself in regions like this when I do that.

The view from atop the hill, the road at center is Highway 395 which parallels the base of the Sierra Range

Opposite direction is Sherwin Canyon. The road drops into the canyon & then climbs back out along the creek.

Another dead end road to check out. Rock Creek Rd heads up another mountain canyon to wait for it... Rock Creek Lake.

Starting to rain on me. But the view! I'm hitting the edge of the rain curtain at right.

Thinking I need to get north to get out of this rain.

Crowley Lake Rd is another ride that parallels the main highway

That's Crowley Lake in the distance.

Nearing Mammoth Mountain, the color of the clouds changed to something much more to my liking

Ever near Mammoth Mountain, don't miss Convict Lake. It's almost walking distance off the main highway (2 miles) yet you'd never know it was there.

Convict Lake, like something out of a postcard

And right across from Convict Lake behind the Mammoth Mountain Airport, another thing you would never know this was here. Ready for three miles of thick gravel. It's worth it, I promise.

Would you ever know there's something super cool over there. Not a chance. I rode by this for 20 years. No kidding.

Hot Creek Geologic Site, crazy green

The magma chamber at Hot Creek Geologic Site is 3 miles below the surface that powers this creek, which is boiling. Ground water percolates deep underground, become superheated and pressurized, then rises back up to the earth’s surface. Hot Creek is known for geysering or water occasionally shooting up from the ground as high as six feet.

This shooting water can be intermittent, unpredictable, and sometime produces an audible popping sound. Hot Creek Geological Site has been closed in previous years when the site became too geologically active and unpredictable. After 2016, the activity relaxed and visitors were allowed back to view the site. If you’re busy zipping up and down Highway 395, you’d likely never know this volcanically active site is even here, a few miles off the main highway.

Mammoth Mountain over there. Mammoth is famous for how much snow they get during some winters. 60 feet not uncommon.

Up and over the pass at Mammoth Lakes is 8000 ft plus I skipped the June Lake Loop, no time for that today. Ever in this region, make sure you ride the June Lake Loop, a short 16 mile loop off the main highway. Starts and ends in nearly the same place.

Complete sensory overload along the June Lake Loop

Ever onward
