EV vehicles

The hard truth and this issue is worldwide...

I looked at doing Solar at my house to power what I use at the moment, plus 70 miles a day on an EV.

Came in at around 45K, looked at the payback and came to the conclusion that I am too old. If I was 10 years younger, I would have pulled the trigger.

We don’t have issues where I live with the grid and everyone I know charge at home during night time when all is asleep, nothing happens and there is light load on the grid. My son lives in CA, where he has demand management from the utility company. When the load gets too high, the water heater, AC and EV outlet cycles off automatically for a few minutes. Never happens after 8pm though.

Our power comes from a nuclear station, excellent rates, so it is hard to justify solar.

Anti EV people (yes I’m looking right at you Bee ) love to point to the “electric vehicle mandate” which actually only applies to vehicles used by the Federal Government (aprox one tenth of a percent of vehicles in the US) but that’s never pointed out by meat heads like the guy in the video. President Biden does want to continue to cut down on tailpipe emissions. What a tool, huh? He also announced a goal of having 50% of cars sold be electric by 2030, but that’s a goal, nothing more. Settle down man. Nobody is forcing electric vehicles down your throat (well , maybe in Canada)
If, in a couple of years you pull up next to me in your ICE vehicle and I roast you with my future Plaid, don’t worry, I’ll wait until you can’t see my face to laugh.

Exactly, we are going to get EV rammed down our throat.....maybe....it will depend if this government gets back in or not.....

And I am getting more and more anti-EV the more I research them.

Plaid? More power to you, in a couple of years a Plaid will be a couple hundred grand to buy so it should roast most everything for that price....

Well uncle Tom, if you feel I insulted you, then I apologize, as that was not my intention.

I don't think there is a right or a wrong here, some folks buy EV's, some don't and some will find everything possible out there to play down the feasibility of an EV. I don't have an EV and won't buy one at this stage of my life, but none of the machines in my factory runs on ICE motors, they are all electrical and some have seen no maintenance for more than 30 years.

If I was doing around 17,000 miles a year, I would strongly consider an EV, but I don't and there is a calender life on the batteries, so at this time they are not suitable for me. Even the Hybrids, there is a calender life on the battery and if the intent is to keep the vehicle beyond 10 years, work in the cost of a battery replacement. I had a Prius, did 220,000 miles without replacing a light bulb, but first time the battery warning light flashed, I got rid of it.

We have to accept that Tesla has been very successful and those trying to follow them competitively are enduring a lot of costs and a lot of pain. Some of them may even abort.

China has 15 EV companies and the top of the list BYD is ahead of Tesla in terms of sales.
I admire Musk for a lot of things. The main reason Tesla survived is he outsmarted the stock shorting hedge funds. And the result is the overvaluation of TESLA stock to unrealistic and stupid high prices. Which allowed him substantial cash conversions. There isn't any possible way Tesla is more valuable than Ford. Or GM. Or Toyota.

And his other brilliance was collecting govt subsidies in carbon credits and converting that into mountains of cash by selling them.

None the less, as a viable automaker, he has a long way to go. It's sounds great to state his sales have doubled. Until you leave out the part that he is still a small fraction of vehicles being sold. He's selling into a cult. Had you bought an ICE Toyota, you'd still be driving it well after 220,000 miles passed.

I made a living in coal for a time. It's awful for the environment. It also is responsible for the basic living circumstances that a good portion of the world relies on to function. And it's deeply rooted in economic benefits for a lot of the world. So I'll never insult anyone that supports coal. If they could do away with it, they already would have. No one in the industry thinks it's clean burning.

You may wish to look at China as a green innovator if you like. But they also are building more coal powered facilities worldwide by a factor of 600% more than the rest of the coal users. My math skills are weak. But I'd bet they are not even close to being net green. We export some of the crappiest dirtiest burning coal to them. Because it's cheap and they can't buy enough from us. I can post pics of the mountains of it we sell to them. Week after week after week non stop. Try stopping that economy to mine Lithium to solve 8% of a problem.

I believe Elon made a mistake in using China as a manufacturing source for his EV. They stole anything of technical value and further make $$ building what they steal from. They are going to sell more EVs than he ever will. And we won't get a dime in our economy from that decision.

As far as this thread and it's insults, I think Bee was very patient and generous as I watch you call him a liar etc. As far as general insults, I'll remind you of one of your overused ones.

You state with some regularity what a struggle it is for you trying to deal with people that think they know things, that they really don't. I paraphrased that a bit. There are several versions of it you use. Things like lack of a good education. Or don't know how to properly research. Or properly post a link.

You might want to check yourself in a mental mirror before you use that one. This board is diverse with people that have smarts that come from a huge pool of backgrounds. That you either fail to see or don't wish to accept. If the apocalypse comes, I'll pick a career military man over a weak engineer, any day of the week.

Tom, it’s OK. You and I don’t know much about each other, besides a few posts. I take criticism well and it’s OK to be wrong, as long as one is mature enough to admit it. Insults don’t matter to me, so if you think I am a weak Engineer without a military background, that insult really does not matter to me. I call a spade a spade, and for those who have to be correct even if they know they are wrong and those who can’t handle the truth, I don’t have much respect.

For me the biggest mistake in life is not admitting that a mistake was made. Those folks generally do not get along with me, neither do they like me, and that is OK.

Total number of Teslas sold in this list= 312,000

Total number of the #1 seller (Ford F-150) =382893. Let that sink in. A single ICE vehicle, and not even a fuel efficient one, by itself outsells all of the ranking Teslas combined.

If you'd like to total up the remaining 22 others, you start to grasp the reality of how poorly EVs are doing. It's 9% of total sales of cars. Seems like you've heard that before. So thank you for linking us the data that confirms it.

I don't see 9% as successful. You of course are convinced otherwise.

No more than buying a used ICE. Cars are all I've done since the 70's; I do my homework and go from there.
I see it as a little different, when you buy a used ICE vehicle, the thought of having to replace the engine doesn't come to mind normally but in a used EV the thought of having to replace the battery is not out of the question, batteries have a limited shelf life.

Was that an argument for the sake of an argument?

Tesla is successful in selling more EV’s world wide second to BYD in terms of EV sales.

Simply posting a statistic of US vehicle sales leads you to believe that I think EV’s are doing better than ICE’s?

What those numbers show is that EV’s in the US are dominated by Tesla and the whole EV landscape has a long way to go. As things stand today, at this moment things are not looking to bright for EV’s. If our next President is a Republican, things will be tough for EV’s state side,

Tesla is aiming at 1,8 million vehicle sales world wide for 2023, second to BYD. Just information, no argument.

EV’s world wide are still vastly outsold by ICE’s, no one questions that.

LOL, I must of really ruffled your feathers at some point, as you seem offended by anything I post. No ego here from your “weak Engineer” Tom.

Just a fact.
If US support diminishes for EV’s in 2024, China will capture the world EV market for years to come.

Another way to look at that is how is an expensive vehicle with a 300-mile range, sold by a company that doesn't even have a real dealership presence and charging options are less than everywhere selling 9%? Add to that that Elon is such a polarizing character and you wonder how the company is surviving.

From all that I've read, China has pretty much dominated the EV market now.

That is correct, with the only real competitor Tesla being close. What China is endeavoring to do is capture the lithium and battery market, thereby being present in almost any EV produced anywhere, plus giving them a cost advantage to other countries. They are almost 80% there already, Europe and the US are starting to withdraw incentives if batteries come from CATL, being the biggest battery maker in China and the world.

The last batch of Tesla's delivered to Canada, were all made in China, but at least some of the profit comes this way.

So Bee, we have to buy more EV's to save the Western world right? Testing your humor...

Gotcha. You earlier stated how Tesla is doing just fine and further state their success. And we all know how you insist on data. Then you post a link of the 25 top selling cars. In an It looked as if you were attempting to support them doing just fine.

I guess finally you aren't arguing after all. You post up data to acknowledge EVs are doing pretty dismally. It's really really easy to be the best selling domestic EV, when nobody else is making them.

Question: You think Tesla is doing dismally as a company, just checking?

Have a look at total revenue, Toyota versus Tesla numbers world wide, third quarter 2023YTD and let me know what you think?

You underestimate the possibility of an engine or transmission needing replacement. Maybe it hasn't happened to you or your circle but it happens more often than you think, on fairly new vehicles (which we used to rarely see in the 70's-90's), and it's quite a bit more expensive than a EV drive battery, but like the drive batteries, it’s usually a warranty issue. The GM 6.2 in so many SUVs and pickups was on backorder which reflects a high nationwide demand, for about a year. Talk about unhappy customers. It's just not news worthy.

I've never heard of anyone buying an ICE vehicle that needed an engine or transmission any time soon....once an EV gets to a certain point, battery charge fade is a reality...

A friend bought a Tesla new, has had it 3 years and it doesn't hold as much charge as it did and it won't get better over time......all batteries have a shelf life...I know ICE engines do as well for the most part but many ICE vehicles I know of, the body falls apart before the engine does.

I know personally unless I'm painted into a corner and have absolutely zero choice, I will never own an EV.
