Gen 3 Trunk mods..... Who has started brainstorming on this already????

Where do you need the measurement? Do you want it X distance from the pivot and up?

I'm honestly not sure best location, was thinking passenger pegs but know you don't run yours. Just a reference spot so I can compare mine and factor in tire size difference. Hell, for this purpose maybe just a measurement between undertail and top of tire work? I just want to make sure the same extended storage that works for my bike and no rub, will work on yours and who ever else's without issue.

I got it revised last night for a better fitment and even gained a little more room, but will have to remove a little room for tire clearance.. Still a gain though.

If curious, enclosure is around 390x220x150

if it makes for a super clean MaxxECU / ignitor install in the trunk would love to offer it as an option when I sell them to folks with extended arms etc.., or just a link to however you plan to sell them.

That would be awesome, would love help out with that. Do you have any cut sheets on dimensions of those handy? I can toss them in there to see if or how they would fit as is. Another option is when I make the non-extended version we can make sure it can fit in there. Totally guessing at this point, but don't believe non-extended will lose a ton of room verse this one.

Planning to shoot the final version to the printer sometime tomorrow, swap the enclosures out this weekend. Also printing in PLA+ Pro, supposedly ABS-like to handle durability better and heat.

After 18 months of ownership, today was the first day I picked up and put my lunch IN the trunk without smooshing anything. :)

i have a 3d printed MaxxSport spare that I could send, i have a couple / few of them I use for wiring etc.

no idea how long they take to print it worth looking at versus just mailing you one

Please don't mail, I was just looking for general size of components to see what/how they could fit.

GrabCAD is invaluable for specific stuff, like this. Perfect, even easier than sketching real quick so tossed it in. No clue how could mount it inside like that, but far rear of the tail is more out of the way and retain all the forward storage. Mess with it more later, was just curious.

Did get a smidge of rub today so will shorten some.

Anyone that's extended and interested, any chance could measure tail height from something I can reference on mine? Just to make sure it can clear. I need to check my 240/18 OD vs 190/17.
I was as walking by my bike on my way to work and remembered this so I grabbed the tape measure because I know that with no shock attached I checked the arc of the tire and I hit the plastic where the original license plate bolts to before I hit the top of the wheel well by a lot. I also know my bike is significantly lower than most people's and I have shortened shock travel so I'm not much in the way of reference other than for first point of contact on a five and a half inch ( 64-in wheelbase) arm.

Okay i know nothing about adjustments on the fly, but my stock subframe is decently swiss cheese at this point after a weight experiment last night (you can take almost 4 lbs in metal and tabs out of a subframe for anyone reading this, gotta offset the added weight from the maxx somehow lol) but would it be easy when the time comes to get one where the ECU pad just slopes down to be clutch with the area beneath it and the wall on the front of the trunk itself didn't extend up? IF its easier to just take a dremel and make my own clearance that's fine too lol. My mind is already working on how to put the Maxx and the air shifter contraption into this in a flat/easy way

I'm following ya. When I was messing with the Maxx model in my model I had the same thought about the ECM nook. It's pretty pointless spare room, the only reason it has stayed was to locate the extended trunk in the correct position. I realized when I went to install, having it locked into the nook made drilling holes straight and snug to undertail as possible easily. I really like your idea to allow more physical room mounting things. What do you think about leaving exterior as is, but make interior at the angle shown to have a flat spot for mounting?

It'd be nice to locate Maxx stuff. I'm going to print items I can this weekend so I can tinker with locations much easier than on the PC.

After riding around with mine for a week, one thing I think should be done is bed liner or undercoat the exterior. It would be more sealed from elements, absorb sound from loose objects in the trunk, protect it from large debris and also make satin/matte black so it will blend in with the undertail.

Updated extended trunk finished printing last night, I'll swap them this weekend and report back.

Thanks! You're a little further back than I am, but I think we are close to the same gap. I have about 90mm between top of tire and location of plate mount on undertail.

I think this is where the Maxx is going to make things more difficult. Gregs middle man box has connections coming out of the top, right side and bottom. WE have to trim the stock ECU mounting pad to get it to fit with the stock undertray. Its part of the reason I wanted to cut the crossbar out the rear cowl mounts too as that freed up a bunch of wiggle room as is. Again, if its too much I can happily take what you make and modify it for my Frankenstein of a bike. Just having the extra space to work with is more than worth it to begin with.

I'm just messing around with it, thinking may could provide mounting holes or a nook for the parts to be placed in. I may be overthinking it as people may have different preference and equipment on top of that, probably best to keep it simple and enjoy the extra space. :)

If anyone has dimensions for the igition and other part, I'll stick it in there just to see what can be fit.

I had a quart of Rustoleum "bed coating" from 2016 laying around, can has been sitting outside for the past few years being used a prop for painting stuff, lol. It looked fine and applied 3 coats and toss in tomorrow. Not sure if it's really needed, but free testing... It does look nice, blends the weld in. Should solve the rubbing and fit a little better up top towards the rear.

Need input... I plan to fill in part of the top like suggested so the inside has a flat area for mounting anything. I need to at a min add the service port base to my model so it has a place to securely go. Maybe allenheads? Or leave blank all together?

Just to update. Installed the new extended trunk after the bedliner Sunday, but has been raining every day so haven't been able to test. Just patiently waiting to test, hopefully tomorrow.

sounds like perfect testing conditions for how it seals
