I get the same gas mileage on 87 as I do on 91 so it's 87 all the way.

Never noticed a power difference, either.

the manual I got ..says to use "premium " In Socal ..we have on tap ..is 87 , 89, 91 .. I do remmeber the days of higher 90's tho sad.gif I've started with 91 ..when the bike was new in 03' .. now im using 87 ..the only differance i find is ..A. price per gal ..B. easier starts ..C. less carbon build up .. off the tailpipe.. wink.gif

I have a question regarding this. I always run 94 octane in my bike and have since I had it. I am beggining to believe some of this about it carboning up the motor because yesterday when I installed my full exhaust it was very sooty inside the header sleeves. I also notice that my bike always has a VERY strong exhaust smell. I mean like when I ride you can TOTALLY smell it all over my close and even the garage fills up with the smell AFTER the bike is shut off. Do you think it could be just running to richly on the 94 octane? I mean I know its mapped correctly and everything so I just can't figure out why it runs so rich it seems.

Can anyone explain why 87 is better in a stock bus.  I would love to know?
Because it will run without knocking or pinging on 87. To get more octane, they usually have to put in additives. Gas with additives doesn't burn as well as gas without them. If you put in 112 octance gas, it would run a lot worse than 87 octane. They really have to dump in the additives to get to 112 octane.

I know this from experience because I had a 15:1 Sportster that I had to run 116 octane gas in. The higher octance gas was necessary to prevent detonation, but it didn't run as smoothly as lower octane gas would have.

I run 87 here in the north east in the summer. In the cooler months I run 92 only because the bike runs hotter and the heat helps LOL. No 87 all the time. The bike does run very hot if any higher octane is used.

I was told when I bought the bike to only use Premium gas (Amoco ultimate was mentioned). I've only used that since. I guess I'm going to go cheaper now

been running 87 on my stock bus from the "get go" and no problems. she runs like a champ!

saw this thread a few weeks ago n made the switch-was running 93 octane all last year n up to now...had 4 tanks of 87 octane thru the bike now, n mileage has gone from 38/39 avg. to 42/43 avg, n i ride alot two-up with the missus (thats a combined weight over 350lbs).
I do mostly freeway riding at uh..."a lil" over the limit:p n it seems like top-gear acceleration has improved a bit too. I have to say this stuff is better for the bike all-around. Till i go big-bore or throw in some hi-comp pistons or turbo, I'm stickn to 87 octane. Good stuff.
Thanx to this awesome .org for savin me more money!smile.gif

I use 87 because it's the minimum, cheaper, and it's less expensive... and costs less than 93. biggrin.gif

87/89 what my bikes designed for. Runs better and cooler, and it's the cheapest fuel.

yea someone has been going through all the old "Poll" threads and voting them.. brings them to the top of the New threads list..

Dang DO3 ... Diggin' deep ain't cha. laugh.gif

Anyways ... I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm not knocking anyone as I see the vast majority uses 87. I'm just saying it isn't too often that "minimum" means "best".

Regular oil works just fine, but many of us use synthetic ...

I personally use 89. I notice a bit of knocking when I use 87 so I don't bother with it. My engine is still stock. I have other mods (pipe, clutch, blahblahblah) but the engine is still stock.

Its not just my bike either. My girl's Busa does the same and aside from ride height, her bike is 100% stock.

Why hasn't anyone dyno'd this yet?

i use 87 in my busa and no problems, i was told that it makes more power on the dyno also?? i use 93 in my gixxer 1000 though, higher compression.

I always use 91 octane in mine, I did use 87 once and got terrible gas mileage. Maybe I'll try it again just to be sure.
