Busa Bash II - Deals Gap Sept 18-19

Most of the guys there will be from the R6messagenet. Here is what they have planned for Saturday.

http://users.adelphia.net/~yamaha20...orthGA_Loop.jpg

The Green dot is the Start point where 143 meets 129 just outside Robbinsville. We will ride up 129 to the Cross Roads of Time and hang for a few MINUTES. We can ride across the Dragon a time or two then top off with gas before heading down 28 all the way into GA. 28 is great twisties from Cross Roads all the way down into GA. There is some of the most incredible sights you will ever see on this route. The Fontana Dam, Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls, Cullasaga Falls, Satula Falls and Satula Mountain and not to mention most everything in GA. Once in GA we will get on Warwoman Road - another great road that is not to be missed - and take it over to Clayton, GA. In Clayton we jump on 76, 197, 356 and 75 back over to 129. Then it is up 129 and across Blood Mountain - this road is like a freaking racetrack with its tight curves like the Dragon but is 2 lanes wide and nearly all the curves are banked really good. We will follow 129 back up to Blairsville, GA. From there it is a relaxing cruise up a section of 4 lane of 129/19 which is nice after all those twisties. We jump on 129 where 129 & 19 split and ride 129 back into Robbinsville to eat and talk about the awesome ride we just had.

There will be 6 or 7 guys from the R1-Forum there as well. Gawarrior, Earache, ZRider, 2ndTime, Kneedrager and maybe a few more.

Here is a link to the R1-Forum thread.

The Busa will shock quite a few riders in the corners. I went with both the R6 and the R1 guys last year. They are like most of us motorcyclists, very easy going and a great group to go riding with There were people at each ride that were very experienced riders all the way down to novices. We should have a great trip. Let me know if you plan on coming and I will get you my cell phone number. I think I have service in Maryville. If not just look for a fat guy on a 99 Busa.

Kevin - Great info! `Twas just jiving about hanging out with R1's--no problem at all and I know the big Busa handles well (for a heavy machine). I checked out your links and traced the route on MapQuest since the map link you posted didn't work for me. It looks like a well planned, scenic ride. I have been solo in that area on a ZX9 (between the Gap and the Blairsville/Suches area) a couple of times and was very impressed. I grew up in Maryville and started riding the Gap back in the Moonshine days--well before it was "discovered" as a twisties Mecca. By the way, I don't think cell phones work at the CROT resort. I was told that you have to go a few miles one way or the other to get a signal.

Thanks for your time and the info.

I am still a "maybe"

contingent upon how my work develops today. If I get there, I'll just park on the CROT front porch early Saturday and look for you guys.

I know I dont have cell service at the CROT. I do believe I have service in Maryville. I will PM you my cell number just in case. I just hate I am gonna miss another Busa Bash.....Grumble, grumble....I tried to get the wife to let me move our vacation to another week.....needless to say that went over like a lead ballon.

Hope you make the trip.

k, so lets try to confirm the attendees, with only 3wks til the event we should start organizing things a bit.

I will bring some chairs and bottled water, hot dogs & some snacks.

I'll be bringing more chairs, cooler, refreshments (beer, smirnof ice). I will be bringing some camping gear for some friends that might be tagging along. If anyone who doesn't have a room yet, feel free to use my gear. I should have more than enough tents to go around. Just let me know.

I'll try and bring some firewood, but thats not a definate.

Brian, we are planning on going up on Wednesday and will probably stay through Tuesday. We may end up camping on the blue ridge at some point. I really want to check out Mt Mitchell state park. Never camped over 6000 feet, should be fun.
Any chance you can get off earlier in the week?

I can't wait. This is going to be a blast (again). Chris

Hey Chris,

I'd love to get up there early, but unless something huge happens at work I'll be lucky to leave around lunch time on Friday to get up there that evening. I've even considered finding a hotel half way up there with high speed access that I could get 1/2 a day in at then finish the drive up. Depending on how finances go, that very well could put me in ashville thursday night working out of the hotel room for 1/2 a day then getting to the gap by mid afternoon. It just depends on work and money as to how early I can get there on friday, I'm just lucky I can work from where ever I have high speed access

man o man I sure wish I could get some up at the gap, cuz I'd be "WFH" a lot more weekends

yeah, you might wanna keep that date

I just got home from 3 days at the Gap. It rained a little every morning and dried up in the afternoons. I went mainly for suspension tuning and oddly, after numereous trials, ended up with the suspension back very near the stock settings.

Anyway, the restaurant is open from 8AM to 6 PM and offers breakfast and various sandwiches. Breakfast is not bad with eggs-to-order, sausage, bacon, toast, biscuits, and pancakes available. Their hamburgers and fries are decent if not world class cuisine (although I've had much worse elsewhere). In essence, the food is "okay". The fresh pavement is nice and you can now get in and out without any "off-roading" required.

There were 3 Harley's staying next to me, and among them, a new Sportster wrecked twice in as many days along with a new ElectraGlide that got upside down--both overconfidently running the Dragon. One evening, after the wrecks, we had a long talk about braking while leaned over...they didn't seem to have a clue. A guy on a R1 went down too and devestated his bike and his collar bone. I did my runs uneventfully on the Cherohola Skyway and on Highway 28 that runs briefly uphill next to the resort (you can barely see 28 in the picture directly behind the BMW cars). Highway 28 is an excellent road of light traffic/enforcement with both twisties and sweepers which lead to Fontana Dam. And, my new radar detector just paid for itself by saving my butt from a Cherokee Police trap on the Skyway drive. I was getting sporadic signal warnings at least 3 miles out from him as I went up and down the mountains. At first, I thought it was some kind of microwave tower falsing but then it got r-e-a-l-l-y strong and there he was...a sneaky injun. I just waved and motored casually by him.

There was a BMW sports car gathering with about 35 cars present. They were buzzing all over the place. I passed a group of 4 or 5 who were letting it hang out on Highway 28 and later, three of them approached me to ask "What kinda power you got in that to get around us so easily?"...hehehe

It was great as usual. I'm ready for more. See y'all there.

hehe, it's not that they didn't know anything about braking... it's just that the little leather thing hanging off the end of the front brake got tangled in their 2 day stubble and when they tried to turn their head to hear the sweet new straight pipes better it cranked the front brake and -slip- there they went.

Great...and welcome.

A little <s>fear</s>...uh... respect keeps us healthy. It's about fun and skills improvement.  Riding at your own comfort level helps keep the helicopters away. If we laugh, it will be with you, not at you.

Hope to see `ya there.

By the way, I couldn't resist photographing these two hard core travelers--a Floridian pro chef and a Canadian school teacher:

I'll bring beer, coolers, paper plates, plastic utensils, condiments, hamburgers, buns, chips, charcoal and lighter fluid.

man o man I cant wait

I think I'm heading up to Ashville thursday night, find a hotel with some wireless internet and work 1/2 in the hotel and then head up to the gap. If I can pull that off, I'll be up to the gap by mid afternoon, rather than middle of the night.
cool.gif

Might also be bringing my neighbor along, he's looking at picking up a TL1000 so he's a possible maybe, but he does know the roads up there pretty well since he's from some place in TN not too far from the gap.

has anyone heard if the latest round of wet weather has impacted the roads in the area? I heard that I40 was closed at some place due to a rock slide ? but no confirmed reports.

k, gut check time .... looks like Ivan should pull into the area thursdayish .... do we wanna still go or should we try to find another weekend?

We should have a much better picture of Ivan's projected path by Monday. I'm going to hang loose at least `til then. I think it's okay to cancel DG Resort reservations as late as 24 hours before check-in without charge. What'cha think?
